Caesar.: While I love AoE I and II (and Age of Mythology), I liked Age III but it was never as fun. The home city system was announced as adding RPG mechanics into an RTS; however, I found tthat this system encouraged playing with the same civilization over and over again, while I prefer to play with as many civs as possible.
That's why I ended up liking the lancers as much as I do. I played almost exclusively Spain, and its city upgrades were focused on lancers and other cavalry units. Plus I really like the word lancers! However I have to admit that from the series, I liked Age of Mythology the most, due to its superb singleplayer campaign.

Relic isn't exactly known for quality in last few years. You probably won't be missing much.

AOM's Fall of the Trident was the best in the franchise! Following the saga if mythological heroed was perfectly fitting for the game. If I had to choose a single "Age of", it would be AOM.

However, for historical games I think the shorter campaigns based on real events and characters work bettter.

I have yet to play a "historical" game that has a properly engaging singleplayer campaign. I haven't played the company of heroes series, but that's because the "WW1-WW2-present" modern-conflict period feels like the most unattractive time period to set a game in.

Looks like throughout the year no new info about AOE4. So hope Microsoft show something at next Gamescom.
