Not only in Galaxy. The whole website is infested with ads. Whenever I visit the page it's telling me to pre-order this, add that to cart, or to browse some deals. It's horrible! It almost feels like one of those stupid online stores for video games!!!

PaterAlf: They are talking about an ad for "Songs of Conquest" that you got at the moment.
avatar
eric5h5: Er, no. That's on the front page of GOG; it has nothing to do with Galaxy. I'm also not sure you can call that an ad when almost the entire front page is showcasing a bunch of games anyway. "Promotion," yes, "ad" no.
I'm not talking about GOG's frontpage. I had a "Songs of Conquest" ad in the recent section of Galaxy yesterday. No big deal though, one click and it went away.

Ditto.

I disabled the store page on Galaxy for a reason. I don't want be spammed by ads either, whether I'm interested or not in whatever is being promoted. It doesn't matter whether it's easy to dismiss or not. Besides, there isn't even a setting where I could say a pre-emptive no to such.

This is terrible, what's the world coming to... :p

Ice_Mage: ...so why even bother complaining?
Because some of us are mainly interested in using the client for downloading and managing our games and nothing more? I get enough unnecessary spam in other clients.

macikowy: Why did you started to harrass us with the ads inside the program?
avatar
eric5h5: It doesn't have any ads in it. Next stupid question?
no comment...

neatfeatguy: It does. At the top of your RECENT, there's a gawd awful ad there now to promote games.

See the attached image. (well, I tried to attach an image....it's not working)

GoG - if I wanted ads in my game launcher I'd use Steam. Don't be like Steam.
That's exactly what I mean. It started with adding the Store Search Option back in April and it really felt like I'm running Steam.
Well, wasn't Galaxy advertised as a friendly replacement of all games launchers?
Seems the history is right... You're always eventually become the thing you're fighting with.

JakobFel: You click the x and it goes away.

Class dismissed. Tomorrow, we'll learn how to stop making a big deal out of nothing.
Yea, it all always starts with some little X-es and not-that-really-bothering images...
No, it ruins the experience and it definitely isn't 'nothing'.
avatar
Ice_Mage: On the one hand, if I wanted to know what's in the store, I'd go to the Store category. On the other hand, you can click the X in the top right corner, so why even bother complaining?
Because in a while you'll get used to that part and after even some more the X is going to disappear.
Then you'll just give up saying 'meh... it's cool this way' and the rest who don't like it ends up with nothing.
So I bother because I find it intrusive and degrading the value of this program.

Dear Gog, please stop being so sales oriented...

Ancient-Red-Dragon: Answer to OP's question: those ads started with Galaxy 2.0, which is an abomination for many reasons, including the one you are rightfully complaining about.

Best thing to do is to revert to Galaxy 1.2, and then manually disable it from updating to the adware-infested Galaxy 2.0 garbage. Then you will have zero ads, and also a much better & more comfortable interface as well.
avatar
eric5h5: Not an ad;
avatar
Ancient-Red-Dragon: Yes it is. It is promoting those games in a very intrusive, unwanted, unasked for, and aggravating way. Those are certainly ads.
Thank you! I'll definitely consider doing that.

I didn't have that. Ironically the only reason I was using Galaxy is because of Songs of Conquest, since I suspect it will be getting fairly regular updates and my (lack of) internet speed makes downloading the offline installer repeatedly not a fun prospect. Definitely no ads here though. Maybe it's because I have the store stuff turned off?

I'll bite: tell me how a little banner advertising a new game release is detrimental to your gaming experience.

I'd be willing to bet that your answer will boil down to a silly reason, ergo "nothing".
Ads in Gog Galaxy? I haven't gotten any, unless you mean how they moved the store tab above my game collection
