I've recently come to realize that Oddworld Inhabitants is [in my opinion] one of the best game developers on the face of the earth ... and here's why ... they are one of the only modern game developers who actively go out of their way to constantly update and improve their past games, while still maintaining the integrity of the original. So far they have released a brand new HD remake of their original game 'Abe's Oddysee' (Renamed New 'n' Tasty), an HD remaster of 'Munch's Oddysee', an HD Remaster of 'Stranger's Wrath', and they are currently in the process of remaking another great classic 'Abe's Exodus' (renamed Soulstorm).

Seriously ... what other game developer does this kind of thing?

That being said, I am curious to know ... what's your favourite game developer?

The Adventure Company, although they've been bought up and don't do all that much these days.
I'm also a big fan of Amanita Design.
Sierra and LucasArts are tied for third due to the fact that both are pretty much gone from the game market.
Edit: Ehhh..wait...The Adventure Company is a publisher, not a developer.
I guess Amanita wins out, then.

I know there's actually a couple that do. Trendy Entertainment still updates the original Dungeon Defenders despite having a 2nd one out. That's the only example that comes to mind, but I know there's been others. Ask omega64, he's the one who told me about this kind of thing to begin with.

I think I would agree with you on Amanita Design, but I still have one problem with their games ... the screen resolution is not big enough on most of their early games. Full screen would be much better!
FireFly Studios updated their Stronghold games and Space Colony game to HD - very nice of them.

[EDIT] Also Paradox Interactive updated Majesty to HD though they didn't create the original Majesty.

Erm... sorry can't agree with that. :v
Here's some thoughts about it, which I pretty much have to agree (to some extent):

But anyway, my favorite would be... erm... humm... fuck, this is hard.

I guess the whole "independent developers" would be my pick, regardless of having a company or not. The passionate ideas, the so called "darlings", the weird and different stuff, the not so different stuff aswell, the bold moves, the bold moves that don't work that well, the aesthetics, art styles, music, lack of music, lack of constraint, etc.
Yeah, that works for me.

I've enjoyed the Stronghold series in the past, and I think you're right to say that they put a lot of effort into keeping their fans happy, but did they have to make their games so bloody hard! Even on easy I can't beat the Stronghold games!

My favourite developer has to be CD Projekt RED, as I've really enjoyed the Witcher universe as a whole, but The Witcher 3 was quite simply my best video game experience ever as a gamer so I can't not honour them with this position on my list.

It's hard for me to sort a list of my favourites from best decending after that though a number of my other favourites in no specific order would have to include LucasArts, id Software, Valve, Crytek, Ubisoft, EA, Activision, Bethesda. This is strictly in terms of personal enjoyment of a video game after it is up and running and I'm able to play it and enjoy it. As such, I am purposefully putting bias aside with regards to bad experiences I've had with some of these companies (mostly Ubisoft and EA) and ignoring anti-consumer practices and other unsavoury aspects of the video game world just for the experiences the actual games provide. Additionally, some of the companies mentioned are the distributor of some of my great game experiences and may not be the actual developer. I didn't want to make a full list of my most memorable experiences and track down the specific developer so it's a bit of a lazy list in that regard. :)

CDPR takes the cake for me though.
For racing games I would say Reiza Studios of Brazil. They design their games so that everyone can more or less play them, you don't need a super rig ... or even a medium rig (which I consider my PC to be).

They don't focus on the graphics unlike so many other studios today, such as Codemasters, instead they focus on the content and the already-mentioned accessibility. They also sell their games as offline versions so that people with no reliable internet access can still play them. And of-course they let you test the games before potentially buying them.

As for non-racing, I would say Wadjet Eye Games. I just really like their games, both the ones they publish and the ones they develop themselves. I'm eagerly awaiting their new game Unavowed. I like the consistent quality in what they do and the nature of the content in their games.Their games have personality. I also like that they have demos available for more or less all of their games, on their website.

Other developers I like:
There's Sector3, formerly known as Simbin. I like their business model, where you only buy the content you want, and get a high discount if you buy multiple items. I also like how they treat each new car and track design model with a great deal of respect and celebration. As with Reiza Studios I feel that the Sector3 devs are truly passionate about motorsport.

Amazingly enough they let you try the car models before potentially buying them. This should be standard practice among racing games but is actually a rare thing. I can't even think of another studio that let's you try the DLC/expansion content, which these car models essentially are, before buying them.

Spiderweb Software, for not compromising on making games they are passionate about, classic RPGs.
They also have demos available on their website for testing them out.
Daedalic. With the exception of Whispered World I loved every game of theirs I played. Edna & Harvey games, the Deponia series, Blackguards, Anna's Quest, 1954 Alcatraz, Fire, Night of the Rabbit and most of all Chains of Satinav and Memoria. I even liked the much-maligned A New Beginning.

Their adventure games look great, are so much fun to play, usually are quite logical (even if it'sa very twisted logic) and have so much heart about them. Great and original characters, stories, worlds, it's just joy to play. They are a wonderful example of doing old-school right. It's 2D point & click adventure gaming pure and simple, but with convenient interface andbeautiful modern graphics and not some pixelated crap "because nostalgia". And Blackguards was something completely different, but still a very good, fun RPG. Not perfect by any means, but as a devs first entry in the genre stil impressive.

I remember being on the Steam forums when the (initially terrible) xbox ports of Stranger & Munch were taken over by Just Add Water from another company & re-released on steam in the oddbox for around $12.
Stewart Gilray (CEO of J.A.W) was posting on the forums trying to act as a mediator between his devs and people with issues. As the topics went on though he was just getting overwhelmed & stressed by the amount of Vitriol that began to develop.

I ended up sending him a PM along the lines of 'Don't let it get to you too much, the anonymity of the internet breeds self entitled arseholes.' he did reply too which I appreciated.

Anyhow looking at the games now they're all great. For someone that never expected to see Munch or Stranger outside of his original xbox I am very happy.
Flying Wild Hog is pretty awesome. Great games, DRM-free, loyalty discounts. :)
Personally, this is my favorite model game.
