Oh my god I'm finally with power again!! to summarise this rare and awful occurrence I will say this: these have been the longest and by far the worst days of my life. I thought the initial cyclone hitting us was the worst part (for me anyway) but no, I actually got away with very little damage to the house or my trees, one of which I'll have to show you all a before and after picture. The heat and completely still air was unbearable during the day as well as the night to the point where we were practically swimming in our own sweat trying to sleep. This, coupled with the disgusting display of some people in the form of stealing generators from houses or traffic lights, to being selfish a-holes that carry the entire stock of ice in their shopping carts; well, it goes without description. However despite all of this, we received a lifeline from my wife's parents who have solar power off the grid (thank heck!). After spending two gruesome nights in our hell hole (one extra if you count the day of the cyclone) we were allowed to stay at their place which was only an hour's drive away, until today... well, a few hours ago. I raced back home as safely as possible, practically barged into my own home after using a key to open the door to find I could turn stuff on again! I don't remember the last time I've felt so relieved.
I know that was a long summary but oh my god I just needed to let it all out.

Good thing your stuff still works and everyone is fine (poor trees though). I know that was a long summary but oh my god I just needed to let it all out.
Having your own solar power available must be great in many ways.
I always thought the whole looting would be an American thing but well, a**h**** are everywhere.
BTW: Did you have this avatar for long? It does fit quite well. :D

Glad to hear you're ok, micktiegs_8!
In my country there is a saying that translated would be something like this:
"A beautiful woman and a cottage by the road are never yours alone." ;)
Klumpen0815: I always thought the whole looting would be an American thing but well, a**h**** are everywhere.
Vythonaut: Yes, unfortunately that's the case. I've encountered with more than one incident here, even without cyclones.. "A beautiful woman and a cottage by the road are never yours alone." ;)

Good luck!

Looking for a positive twist here; you all don't have to worry about earthquakes down there, or do you?

Not really. We've got some fault lines here but none are significant on the mainland. In my almost 39 years, I can remember feeling the windows rattle briefly from one when I lived in Sydney, some time during the 90s. To put it in perspective, there was an explosion (gas from memory) 10 miles or so from my house at the time that rattled things much more than the earthquake did. List of earthquakes in Australia
Coastal towns, such as Eden where some of my family are from, have been prone to the effects of tsunamis. I'll never forget Dec 26th 2004, 2 days after I had completed my 240 mile walk down the south coast of NSW. I walked down to the wharf at Twofold Bay, one of the deepest natural harbours in the world, and there was no water!! I have never seen anything like it in my life, and have been visiting that wharf since I was 3 or 4.
Taken from wiki "The catchment area of the bay is 11 square kilometres (4.2 sq mi) with a volume of 334,559 megalitres (11,814.8×106 cu ft) over a surface area of 30.7 square kilometres (11.9 sq mi), at an average depth of 10.9 metres (36 ft);[6] making the bay reputedly the third deepest natural harbour in the Southern Hemisphere"
That's a lot of water to vanish. When I returned to my grandfather's house, we saw that the massive tsunami of 2004 had hit.
