There are a few things that are good to know that can help with that, aside from just checking the compass:
* When a battle starts, the direction you're facing does not change. If you're facing away from the enemy, then, running away will advance you forward in the dungeon (so sometimes running away can help you stay oriented).
* When a battle ends, the camera will move back to the position it was when you started the battle (assuming the battle didn't end with you dying).
* When you win a battle, you will be facing the same direction you were when the battle started.
By the way, the Game Boy Color adaptation, Quest RPG: Brian's Journey, doesn't have this issue; battles occur on a separate screen, and the areas are overhead 2D with no camera issues to worry about. (Yes, the game actually did get a GBC version.)
