Dunno if it's been suggested, but Torchlight 2 is pretty good for kids.

darthspudius: It's best to start them early or they'd be another casualty in the word of fat people who think books are boring.
Yeah, they'd end up fat people who think books are great, or even fat writers.

(What does being fat has to do with anything?)
When I was 8 my favorite games were Doom 2, Master of Orion 2, Mortal Kombat 4, the Dangerous Dave series (especially the second one) and Heroes of Might and Magic 2 .

That's because you grew up in Romania. Doom 2 must have seemed pretty tame by comparison. :P
LBA 1 & 2. Totally magical games, pretty dated visually but still pleasant to see. Very adventurous, the first game may be a little difficult for him with some unfair things like getting damage from running into walls in isometric environments but they have a good balance between the more actiony parts and the more relaxed parts in which you just want to get lost in the world.

"A little", lol. xD
The Commander Keen series is not on GOG, but they are some of the games I enjoyed most around that age.

Exactly this, don't give him crap games made for imbeciles just because he is 8. I have been playing Heroes 3 with my nephew since he was 6 and he is no genius. We played some Orion 2 as well, but he likes Heroes more.
Most kids love Nintendo, so relatively simple and colorful platformers.
I can't say I have recommendations, Giana Sisters and Pandemonium are very hard, maybe Trine.

edit:

Wacky Wheels
Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure
Pinball machines
Beyond Good and Evil

sternfan: Hi all,

I have my 8 year old nephew for a bit and would like to set up a few games for him. I previously set up the lego harry potter game - but he's not really into it.

Any recommendations for kids (8 year old boy) games on GOG?

Thanks,
Rob
Just Cause 2 and the GTA games.

Exactly. Just because he is a kid, doesn't mean he is interested in "games for kids".

mistermumbles: Duke Nukem 3D. You're welcome!

tinyE: Mortal Kombat you idiot. He probably already has Duke 3D, it's been here so long.
*smacks own forehead* Gosh, I'm so stupid sometimes. You're totally right.

I wouldn't qualify any games on my list as 'kids games', just ones that didn't give you walls of texts and complex tasks to complete that weren't tied to mechanics...

Hell, if we weren't limiting it to GoG, i'd totally recommend Megaman-X for SNES (and Megaman 2-6 for NES)

I saw the thread title and jumped in specifically looking for how you recommend games like Postal or Carmageddon. Well, I wasn't THAT far off. :D
Hocus Pocus
A first person shooter: If something like Blake Stone won't work you should be able to find a download for chex quest around.
A small strategy game would be good, look for older. I loved Sword of the Samurai at 10 but not sure if it will peak their interest, however, some introduction early is beneficial to developing a love of it.
Shovel Knight
Valdis Story: I can't remember anything specific in it but haven't played much.
Roller Coaster Tycoon or another tycoon. Maybe a little complex but can learn without much trouble esp. playing with them.
Machinarium.
