I've already noticed that quite a few of my DOS games here on GOG are 64-bit compatible. All of the AD&D games, for example. They must have started updating them without telling us. I know that DOSBox is already 64-bit, so there's really nothing to worry about. Just be patient.

Mr.Mumbles: Here's to hoping that Boxer might get updated to take advantage of that.
avatar
janichsan: Well, I don't think this will be happening. The developer of Boxer has been completely radio silent on all channels for almost five years already, the last (minor) update for Boxer is more than three years old, and the last activity on its GitHub was more than two years ago. I don't see him suddenly turn up out of the blue and update Boxer in the next few weeks before Catalina drops.

So, unless GOG has something else up their sleeves, the DOS games here will become incompatible to the latest version of macOS in the nearest future.
You were only looking at master there is a separate branch for 64bit https://github.com/alunbestor/Boxer/tree/64bit/master
All is well that plays well :-)

I noticed that, too, later. But if you look more closely, there isn't that much activity in that branch either: the most recent update consisted of minimal changes to two lines of code.

The last more significant changes happened by now also already 18 months ago without resulting in an update or even a really useable compilable version.
Just get the 64bit DOSBox also there is the MacOs frontend

DOSBox-0.74-3.dmg

Dapplegrey v7.2.1 for intel macs only

Ah sorry for that, just noticed the branches thing and thought I'd mention it.
Did you have a look at this
https://github.com/alunbestor/Boxer/issues/100 the change on the 7th of August was specifically to get 64bit to work and there is an issue posted about problems getting joysticks to work on 64bit so it seems it is possible to get something working. But yes seems a bit shaky.
Have you tried https://github.com/MaddTheSane/Boxer the maddsV2 branch is 64bit, I think, not sure if its in a better or worse state than alunbestors version. Its only seen 3 commits this year so not exactly under heavy dev, just mentioning in case you have time to kill.
Hopefully it will all work out eventually.

MaddTheSane's fork is actually the basis for the changes in alanbestor's 64-bit branch, so these are both currently the same.

Really the network shows no pulls from maddsV2 branch and there have been a number of commits on that branch and only one to do with a crash on alanbestors. But I'll shut up about something I'm just eyeballing and know nothing about.

Most of my games aren't. Attempts to get info from GOG haven't really gotten any clear answers. This wasn't a secret, so very very disappointed that there's been no proactive communication on this. We need three lists: ones that work, ones that don't (but will) and ones that never will.

If you are talking about games that run in DOSBox, then there are no such categories. The categories would be: 'Updated to 64bit DOSBox', and 'Not updated to 64 bit DOSBox'.

For the second category, you can just do it yourself if you can't wait for GOG to do it.

Is there possibly an instruction on how to turn the gog-boxer32-packages into boxer64 packages?

I find it very disturbing that no one seems to care at GOG. I mean - it's Good old Games, isn't it? They should at least announce if they are aware of the problem and are going to fix that in the future. Leaving this up to the customer/community is lame...

GOG is doing it.
I already got about 20 Mac-only updates for the specific issue.

Okay - i still wait patiently until i see updates to my boxer games. None of them (4 or 5) have received an update lately...
Thanks for the heads up, tho

Yup, I can confirm that several of the DOS games I have installed have been updated.

They no longer use a Boxer based wrapper, but a simpler DOSbox wrapper without Boxer's amenities.

The DOSbox version GOG seem to have updated with is horrible. It's lost all the Mac UI niceties of Boxer and, most importantly, the aspect ratio is all wrong. Wish they'd update with the 64bit version of Boxer.
