So this game is Windows 7 only?
This works for me on windows 8.1.

Treatid: 1) Run regedit.exe
2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/AppCompatFlags/Layers
3) You should see an entry for Gangster.exe. Double click it to edit it.
4) Replace the entry currently in it with
"$ DWM8And16BitMitigation 8And16BitTimedPriSync 8And16BitAggregateBlts Layer_ForceDirectDrawEmulation"
(remove the quotes)

Directly run the game from Gangster.exe in the game folder (don't try to launch from the Gog Launcher). No compatibility options are needed. This fix will not interfere with other programs or windows. No need to kill explorer.exe.

640 x 480, 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 all seem to work fine.

The Menus are still fubar - but the stuttering and mouse movement are fixed.

On my machine, I can see the menus by Alt-Tabbing out of the game and back in - this messes up the display while in menus so that the menu text is no longer hidden.

[My understanding of the problem with menus is that they are being drawn in the wrong order due to a timing issue - the background is overwriting or hiding the text.]

[This is from Windows 8.1 64 bit with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 Graphics card]

Edit: Some grief may be saved by ensuring that "Task Manager|Options|Always on Top" is ticked.

YouGina:
About the messingup of menus and graphics: fallout classic messesup and kknd extreme also messes up after alt tab, as for gangsters, this game is not a 'click and play game', i mean that you can't start the game by clicking shortcut and voila the game starts without problems, we need to think and seek things out in order to get it to work.
Kknd extreme is the same story, you will need to do some tinkering to get it to work.
Hey guys I still have the Problem with not seeing the Menu bars properly, did anyone find a solution please? I have as well Windows 8 and hope someone can help me. When I try to tab out i cant tab in anymore.......

Hi,

I really loved this game, so I bought it knowing that it won't officially run on W8.

I tried the different tools and workarounds suggested on the forum, but i think it wasn't enough, specially the mouse lag thing.

So, I've downloaded DxWnd (as someone suggested, you can google and download it on sourceforge).
With the following profile I was able to run and play it.

It is still far from being acceptable, but I think with a little tweaking we can get to it. So please, if you manage to fix any of the issues do share your findings.

Notes:
* Im using W8.1, HighDPI screen 1920x1080.

Issues with this profile:
* Works only with 1024x768 setting. (other resolution may just need tweaking)
* Double mouse cursor. DxWnd gives the option to either hide or show the OS cursor, the Menu section needs it, but the agenda/street does not.
* MENU: looks awful black/white, but at least button labels are correct and clickable... (most of the times),
* AGENDA: the mouse doesn't lag, but it leaves a trail on some areas of the GUI.
* AGENDA: There's a constant black square flickering on top left, that doesn't affect the playing area. Probably related to mouse/cursor.
* STREET: works very well, as far as i played.
* Lastly, but not less important, since I tried lots of combination there might be active flags in the profile that does not affect the behavior at all.

Features:
* It works in windowed mode. No annoying changes of resolution.
* Mouse doesn't lag.

Hi guys.
Thanks for the fix. But still experiencing delay whenever the map (roof-top view) is showing.

Anyone know how to fix this?
