I used to love that game, flawed as it was, is this anything like it?
I never played the Gangster game, but I'll try and explain the game best I can to help.

Gangland is like a real-time strategy game with a little role-playing involved. You have two modes you can play in, skirmish and campaign. You can play against the computer in a skirmish game, as well as play it in multiplayer against others.

Campaign you take control of one mobster and play through his story. Skirmish you have so many players start out with a base, then you all start to take over a city at the same time, meet up with the other players taking out their gangsters and buildings. Kill the leader of the gang and they are out of the game.

Gameplay is the same in Campaign and Skirmish. You start out with your head mobster guy(you can choose from 4 different kinds in skirmish), then use him to move around the city taking over businiesses to bring in money for your gang. With money you buy upgradable weapons for your gangsters, purchase new gangsters, and buy businiesses out so they bring in more money for you and open up new shop options. There are a vareity of gangsters you can get, some are melee, some are range, and several are special type of characters that can blow up buildings and a few other special things. You can buy cars to drive around in, blow up buildings with dynamite, get special characters and jobs by answering a phone that rings on your desk at your main office.

Some maps also have the police on them, but some maps don't. The police will walk around the streets and open fire on your gang if you don't pay off the police chief when he comes to your main office. The police chief will come into your office to demand money every so often, and if you don't pay and keep the police chief waiting, the cops will start opening fire in your main office right then and there.

Another cool thing is that you can also get married and have kids. There are three different types of kids you can get(a fighter, businessman, and a seductress), and you can only have 3 kids with your wife. The type of kid you get is random, but you have 3 wives you can try and choose from to make a certain type of kid you get better. Each kid excels at a different thing, but they need to grow up first, and if your wife dies, you'll have to raise and protect your kid till they grow up. You'll have to find your wife in the city first though, and then go to the church and get married. Your kids are controllable characters and they can help run your gang, but your wife is an uncontrollable character.

You control your gang members just like a real-time strategy game, moving them around the city to fight other gangs, help protect buildings with their protect mode, and help take out business security.

In the end, it can turn into a rather fast paced action game controlled like a real-time strategy game, with some little role-playing elements like upgradable gang members and a few stats.

I never got to far in the campaign mode, but I can tell you that the skirmish mode is really fun. Great against friends in multiplayer, but fine against the computer too, although sometimes the A.I. dies too fast at the start of a game.

Thanks for the description, I bought it and played it for a bit and so far its fun, it's nothing like Gangsters, and it's nothing like any game I played before!
I'm gonna give it a go too... still downloading though..
One thing I love about this game is sometimes I'm doing really good, then I'll be doing something with my leader and get murdered right there on the street, quickly and brutally. Some times you're just in the wrong place at the wrong time regardless of how good you're doing.
