It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).

have look through the other similar questions but cant understand how to

1) choose VGA mode in the configuration menu (INSTALL.EXE) for it to work as stated by Patryn

2) replace ProgramFiles with ProgramFiles (x86) as provided by Namur.

Any help will be greatly appreciated! :)

Well, you don't indicate which threads/posts you are referring to but in regards to the ProgramFiles and ProgramFiles(x86) - that comment was just to help another user locate the game folder, which can be in either one of those locations depending on your Operating System being 32bit or 64bit.

So my comment relates to finding the game folder on your hard drive, nothing else.

Instead of using INSTALL.EXE, you can also edit "RESOURCE.CFG" (found in the GK1 directory) and replace VESA.DRV with VGA.DRV.

Don't forget to edit the DOSBOX-CONF with a scaler. Personally I suggest 2xSAI. A lot of people like HQ2x better but I think that scaler "assumes" too much. The combination of calculation of pixels and slight blurring in 2xSAI works very well with those hand-painted backgrounds.

PS: You could also try the newest SVN-build of SCUMMVM which, I think, supports GK1.

Whoa. I read this thread and edited my resource.cfg just for funsies, and the effect was totally opposite of whatever I'd expected. Most obviously, the higher-res toolbar, icons, and portrait art reverted to its super DOSsy-DOS low-res style I remember from my girlhood.

The difference is so jarring, I am attaching a side-by-side comparison (VESA on your left, VGA on your right).

Well, you forgot one vital step:

You forgot to add filtering to your VGA game. Try 2xSAI for example and make another comparison. And concentrate on what fills the screen for most of the time: the backgrounds.

How do you do this? I can't find any such thing in the GK folder or the GK DOSBOX subdirectory.
I tried what Patryn said and it did work . The backgrounds are far better and I can now see with detail the items around me. It is true as well that the inventory items and the control panel above the screen look a little blurry. Would be nice if we could find a setup to correct this.

I'm sorry for the bump but I'd also like to have an answer to this...
I'm new to GOG and GK1 was my first download. I'm finding it unplayable with the current graphics (extremely pixelated) and I already have a headache from the opening scene! I have a really nice laptop with a 17" (full 1080HD) screen and have run many other games without problems like this. Is there any way to reconfigure or reinstall without mucking about in configuration files? I know this is an older game but would think the updated files for Windows 7 would br free of such problems.

Is there any hope or should I ask for a refund and try something else?

Of course I don't know what it looks like on you'r laptop, but if it looks like in this playthrough

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WULkhdQmJQw

I don't think it will get any less pixelated. That is just what the game is supposed to look like (this playthrough does suffer from some of the soundissues though -the lisps-, for which there is a solution btw.).
Please, stick with the game and get used to the pixels. Ti's definitely worth it (and prepares you for a lot of other good old games as well) as this is one of the best (adventure) games ever made.
I can't find the .conf files too. And if I try to install only KG1 with no DOSBox and then search for my installation of DOSBox, it says its an old version and won't let me install GK. Although my version of DOSBox is the latest one.
Can you tell me where I can find this *.conf files and where and how I replace VESA.DRV with VGA.DRV?

Thank you!
