When I first installed Gabriel Knight 3, I just tested it to see if it worked. It did, but I didn't run it again for a few months. When I try to run it now, the screen goes black with the following error message:

Sorry, this program requires support for 16-bit color mode.

Then it just returns to desktop. I googled the error, and it seems to be the message you get when you try to run in windowed mode. I didn't change any settings since installing, but I checked and it was set to run in a normal window, so I set it to maximized, but it didn't help.

I've tried re-downloading the installation file and installing again. I've tried different compatibility settings. I've tried renaming sierra.avi.

The operating system is Windows 7 64-bit SP1.

Any ideas?

Thank you! Oddly I tried setting the graphics to 16-bit before and the screen just turned black, but it worked this time. If anyone else is having the same problem, here's how to do it:

1. Right-click your desktop, select Screen Resolution.
2. Select Advanced settings.
3. Select the Monitor tab.
4. Under Colors, select High Color (16 bit) and apply.

Some older games are weird like that...for instance, my wife has an older game Post Mortem...and it's a 16-bit game...but the only way to get it to run under Win10x64 is to changing the color-depth for All Users to 8-bits..! (Setting it to 16-bits doesn't work, but it is clearly not an 8-bit game...;) Go figure--at least it's running...:))
