aeh,.. just started the game but i wonder how do you actually repair the hull? I see the hangar option but it seems that this concludes the game.
Or do you have to wait until you find an outpost.
I just want to be sure, but from what i see it is the outpost's that are sometimes there. But can you eventually repair it yourself?

To repair the hull, you either need to find a shop or make use of hull repair drone (which in turn requires an operational drone system); the repair arm augmentation repairs your ship every time you get scrap, but since it results in you always getting less scrap even when you are undamaged, it's not advisable. Some random encounters also end with the person you saved either opening shop at good prices or flat out healing you for free.

- You can do it in every store (most common option)
- One of the random events is hull repairing ship. It's a very good option because it's cheaper than in store
- Sometimes you'll be rewarded for saving somebody and he'll repair you for free
- You can get hull repairing drone

EDIT: ninja'd and forgot about repair arm augmentation ;)

Also note that, as the guys above explained, since there are some random events that can grant you free/cheap repair, it is usually quite profitable to avoid full repairs at a shop:
Unless you have very weak shields/evasion, you can repair untill you are "in the green" and leave a couple of notches unrepaired; that gives you some extra scraps and make those random event actually beneficial... a tiny risk vs reward

You also get 10 repaired for free entering the last stand, so you might not want to repair to the top right before Sector 8.
Ah. ok, that is helpful. Got to see what choice is better. Its tempting to fight but at the same time get damage to the hull. I feel i gamble and its not clear what is the better choice.
