i just down loaded the game and hve no clue how to open the game up any ideas?

I think you should give us more details about your problem. Are you installed the game? Or just download it?
As I remember, I hadn't any problems with FTL. I downloaded setup, instal the game and then open FTL from desktop shortcut. Nothing unusual.

If you downloaded using the gog downloader, the installer is located in Documents/GOG.com Downloads
