Okay- So for the first time, I decided to buy something from GOG from a discount code a Streamer on youtube gave out.
Somehow I thought I was going to get a "Steam Key" for this purchase and a DRM free version.

As in the past my experience of buying games on Humble Bundle and FTL, and from paradox store, they gave out DRMfree version of their games as well as the steam key.

I only play the game on Steam anyways, and my experience has always been when the game is broken or gets new content updates- they get automatically updated for you via Steam.

How does it work on GOG when a game is getting updates/patches/bugfixes from the developer when it's DRMfree?

And in the case of FrostPunk people are getting day one fixes, mentioned on their blog.
(Also I was reading new content scenarios are coming soon in the future for free. how do we get that with GOG?)

Where do DRMfree users stand when it comes to updates/patches/bug fixes?

I'm also experiencing some technical issues with this game and want to know how we get updates.

You can use optional Galaxy client or download them manually after login on GOG webpage.
If you want easy automated updates, install GOG Galaxy. It's just like the steam client but a bit behind on some features such as a marketplace. On game updates we might get them a little bit slower because steam is more popular and thus more important for developers, but normally it should only be a few days delay max.
