It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

The game doesn't seem to recognize my graphics card, so it seems I need to install this to get it to work. Can anyone tell me how to do this properly?

So when you install Freespace Open, Freespace 1 is actually a mod called FSport. You install Freespace Open over retail Freespace 2 using the instructions that you can find on the forums here (stickied thread) or on www.hard-light.net. Playing FS1 is as simple as downloading the mod either in the Freespace Open Installer or manually and then launching the FSport mod in the launcher instead of the regular game. Good hunting!

The launcher tells me it needs to be "Error: The launcher must be in the same directory as the binary you are trying to use." Any idea what this means? It's in my GOG Freespace 2 directory.

Are you using the Linux, Mac, or Windows launcher? If it is for Windows, I may not be able to help you too much since I don't use it myself.

However, just in case I am, what is the full path of the mod and the launcher?
I use Windows. I installed the mods to C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2. Checking the stickied thread, it would seem it the installer also gave me an out-of-date version.

You don't have mediavps_3612? The various auto-installers should be up-to-date by now. 3.6.12 has been out for awhile 9despite what it says on the FSO website I am pretty sure it downloads 3.6.12) - I would be surprised if it is still downloading 3.6.10. The Fsport version I believe is 3.3 (although I'm still using 3.2). From the sound of things the new 3.6.13 mediavps should be right around the corner, but aren't out yet.
Okay, I ran into a problem after manually installing the whole thing.

Namely, when I tried to launch the campaign in FSPort, it told me too ship classes were missing.

Try using the automated installer from here: http://scp.indiegames.us/bnr_installer.php. It's what I use and is multi-platform. It should be the easiest way to install the FSO engine and FSport.
Okay, I'll give it a shot.

Got this message when it was done:

"Post-Installation Notes for 1024x768 Command Briefing Animations
IMPORTANT NOTE: There was an error while installing this section. You may need to run the Installer again in order to ensure that this section works correctly."

Should I be worried?

I think it should be fine with no reason to worry. This guy had the same warning popup but everything worked for him alright regardless: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/freespace_series/1024x768_command_briefing_animations_install_error
And I have some suggestions in that post if the command briefing doesn't work. Best of luck!

Works just fine. Thank you very much.

The only problem I have is that my Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 has a tendency to lose center tension after a mission or two. This has been a problem in most games from the start on account of their being no Vista drivers for it, but Freespace Open is odd because the joystick will work just fine at first. It's fixed by exiting the game and rebooting it, but I was wondering if you might know a fix for this?

I'm afraid I don't (I just have a normal joystick). You can try over at the hard-light forums? There might be someone there who knows something about getting FF joysticks working with FS Open.

Glad your FSport troubles are solved! Good hunting!
