Greetings,
I picked up Descent: Freespace recently and have grown incredibly frustrated. It seems no matter what I do I cannot get past the mission Clash of the Titans without the ship I'm protecting getting the snot kicked out of it. Maybe I'm just bad at playing games but I'd really like to get past this damn mission. I've tried cheating but the game won't let me move on past the mission when I do that. None of the trainers I've found online seem to work with this version of freespace. My next bet was to try and see if I could find a mod or something but they keep referencing files and folders I can't find anywhere!
I found one that was supposedly made for Freespace 1, it said to copy the file into a Maps folder, can't find it. I've seen places mentioning editing .tbl files. Can't find them. I know I'm a complete idiot when it comes to these things but could it be something to do with Vista? Or perhaps the alterations gog might have done? Any help would be welcome. I'd like to get past this damn level and finish the actual game.

There's 2 real ways to do that mission. The first is to get your squadron to protect the Bastion (target it and then do "defend my target" from the comms menu), they'll do their best to shoot down the bombs and attack the bombers when they can, you can then focus on killing the bombers as fast as possible and it should reduce the amount of damage the Bastion takes while the other squadrons destroy the enemy cruiser

The alternative option is to swap your ships for bombers (I think you can, I can't quite remember) and load up with the heaviest warheads you can. If you can get every squadron to attack the enemy cruiser with heavy warheads, you should be able to take it down fairly quickly and then just mop up the enemy bombers. You might even be lucky enough to score the killshot on the cruiser which is always gratifying

I usually pick a Hercules with Avengers on the four-gun slot and Banshees on the two-gun slots, accompanied by a full set of Interceptor missiles. The rest of Alpha wing fly Ursa bombers with Prometheus cannons and Hrabinger/Tsunami bombs. Beta wing has Valkyrie fighters with Avenger cannons and Interceptor missiles all the way. The third wing (Gamma?) is irrelevant since they don't appear in-mission.

Once the mission starts, divert all power to engines and head for the jump node ahead. Tell Alpha wing to form up on you. When the Bastion jumps in, order Beta to cover it. When the Tantalus jumps in, order Alpha wing to disarm it; that way they'll deal some serious damage to it while at the same time taking out weapons and making it easier for the Bastion once the destroyers are within range of each other.

Have faith in Beta wing and hope that they can take out the Shivan fighters assaulting the Bastion. Your job is to focus on the bombes launched by the Tantalus, and possibly the bombs they fire if they get within range. If you can get a break between bomber wings, try to take out some fighters, and possibly the Tantalus's weapons.

By using these tactics, I've always managed to keep the Bastion alive, and often even over 35% hull integrity (a secondary/bonus objective).

Alright. Now does anyone know how to get mods installed or added to the game? That's been frustrating me as well.
Thanks for the advice by the way. Unfortunately I've tried variations of both tactics and to no avail though I'll keep trying once more when I have a little more patience.

your main focus should always be to shoot down any income torpedoes, don't forget to use the B key to target enemy bombers AND their bombs. Cycle through it often so you don't miss any. If you can get all the bombs before they hit the Bastion you're basically in the clear in the mission, those are by far your biggest threat.
As for the mods, there's a couple stickies on this forum with instructions. Also, hardlightforums (google it) has instructions and full installers, once you get the FSopen installed the mods aren't too hard.
