Recently updated, the FSO Installer really is the dog's knees (or bee's bollocks) when it comes to getting the complete latest package of Freespace Open and major mods/campaigns.
Basically:
1. Install FS2.
2. Get and install OpenAL.
3. Get the installer (fsoinstaller.com), run it (requires Java) and point it at your FS2 installation folder.
4. Let it install everything (warning: many GBs of data), just the basic FSO engine or pick and choose what you want.
One of the possible downloads is the latest wxLauncher - download and install (you'll need to run the setup file manually), it's much better and more flexible than the older SCP Launcher and it works fine under Win8 too. Then simply open wxLauncher, configure to your taste and off you go. :) If you want the basic FS2 experience with the new bells & whistles, make sure you pick "MediaVPs 2014" as your mod.
