Hello.
I just wanted to know what, and in what order, should I install mods\games to get the best up to date experience with Freespace (A list would be nice). I bought FS1 and FS2 on gog a while back and now I feel the time is right for those games.

I did some research of my own, I'm not just asking this because I am lazy. As I understand I need two mods for this right??
The first is the Source Code Project for Freespace 2 that will make it beautiful. Second FSOpen that is a port of the FS1 for the FS2 SCP, which as I understand, makes my purchase of FS1 useless??

I also would like to mention that I don't want any new content or change in the models or art.
Anyways your help will be appreciated.
As far as I know there are no real differences between the FS1 and FSOpen mod campaign that brings FS1 into the FS2 engine. Personally I found ownership of the original useful as for the Mac there is a problem with the movies that come with the FSOpen mod (they put the FS1 movies in a new codec that Macs don't like very well) so ownership of the original codec movies worked well. You can also claim that since you own the FS1 assets you are better able to claim downloading those FS1 assets FSOpen is probably not technically supposed to distribute is okay. FSO is purely legitimate but since FSOpen makes use of FS1 voice work and movies and I'm pretty sure technically you shouldn't use it unless you own FS1. That's how I justify my purchase of FS1 anyway! :)

So install FS2, then install FSO engine, then install any mods that take your fancy including FSOpen. There are some automated installers. A good guide is OldEnt's forum post on GOG () or the hard-light [url=http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Getting_started]getting started.

As for other mods, I recommend the Blue Planet mods: Age of Aquarius (the first and a pretty good game, fully voiced) and especially War in Heaven (the second so far and an excellent game, not voiced ... yet). They are fan-made sequels to FS2.

Best of luck with the installation. It's not so hard, but depending on what you choose to download it can be a really huge download - i.e. the least you can download is already huge and some of the mods are big too!

Good hunting!

So if Turey's automated installer is working it will find and download the mod for you (as well as lots of other mods). It's what I use.

You can manually download the FSport here:

As I understand auto. installer is a bad idea because it uses older versions (3.6.10 instead of 3.6.12) so the manual one for me.
Thanks for the big help I think I'll manage the next part.

Actually the auto-installer installs the newest engine - just one of the webpages never got updated to reflect that :)

So one could use Turey's auto-installer just fine to install the latest engine, but the manual installation will work perfectly well too.

Also there is a new engine (3.6.14 as opposed to the current 3.6.12) hopefully just around the corner - although I've been saying that for awhile, for open source projects "soon" does have a slightly different meaning :P - as it is in the final release candidate stage. So keep your head up for that engine's release.
