So, I got to mission 3 of the teaching missions, and the next mission is the same way. The game is ultra fast. It's like the game's limiter isn't working. It was just fine the first two training missions, but after that? No luck. I've searched and the closest thing I found was a post years ago that was never answered.
Any ideas?

Thanks for your time.

Does the GOG version come with a program called setspeed.exe? If so, use that to control the speed of the game.

Otherwise, have you looked into playing the game using the Freespace Open Source Engine?

I looked, but the links for it were all broken.

Plus, it would kinda suck to pay for a game, only to have to get a free version of it. Besides, if I have this problem with Freespace, wouldn't I have the same problem with Freespace 2? They are essentially using the same engine.

For Freespace Open? or for setspeed.exe? Some GOG games come with setspeed.exe (but you can't set the path of which .exe it is set to operate on unfortunately), but yeah I think setspeed seems to have disappeared from the web unfortunately.

Have you tried the fixes here?

Well the free version is only for the new modern game engine - you still have to pay for the Freespace 2 game from GOG to get the Freespace 2 game assets. It is true to play Freespace 1 using FSport (the port of FS1 for the FSo engine) is technically "free" once you own Freespace 2, but really in order to use the FS1 assets, it is better, morally, to own the FS1 assets as well. Actually for me I even had to since my Mac played the GOG-version of the FS1 cinematics better than the FSO encoding of the cinematics (the Freespace Source Code project made native ports of the game for Mac/Linux).

If you haven't bought Freespace 2, I would do so. Then download the FSO engine from here:
http://scp.indiegames.us/bnr_installer.php

It's pretty straightforward, but here is a getting started page to familiarize yourself with the FSO installation process:
http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Getting_started

The Freespace Open Engine is really a vast improvement over the vanilla game for both FS1 and FS2 - beautiful HD graphics, compatibility fixes, etc ... I would highly recommend getting it.
Alright, I'll get into the port thing. Too bad, but ah well. I don't have any input lag so I never clicked it. My problem is that once the combat in the third training mission starts, the game triples in speed. But I'll check out that thread, thanks.

Yeah the one downside with new engine is that it takes up a lot more room - it's a big download and there are a lot of mods available for FSO with their own user generated assets which likewise can add up.

It's possible the fixes in that thread have pleiotropic effects, but I think you're better off with the FSO engine.

The installer link is currently not available. A new version of the installer is being coded and should be available in the near future.

Shouldn't be selling a game that won't run properly.

My mistake - I am playing FreeSpace 2.
Exact same issue.

First two missions are fine; the third is so sped up as to be unplayable.

try to contact support?

Actually there was a similar problem with Iwar-2, the person solved it by simply moving the game out of program files folder to the C drive (alternatively I would imagine running as administrator should also work).

Sometimes it just a matter of some aspect of the hardware/installed software that interacts with a particular program. GOG does however support their games if you run into problems playing them.

You can install the open source engine manually (not too difficult) - follow the getting started link:

or the stickied thread in this forum.
