I wish to play Freespace 1 with the keyboard and a mouse. In the menus the mouse works perfectly, but as soon as I start a new game (the first tutorial mission) the mouse movements aren't picked up. Button clicks work fine, such as firing weapons, but the ship won't yaw or pitch when I move the mouse.
Been through the control configuration several times but have yet to find anything that should disable the mouse. There doesn't seem to be any other topics on this on the boards either...
If possible I'd like to refrain from using FSO. I like my games the way they were intended by the dev teams :-)
Any ideas?
Edit: Oh, and the mouse I'm using is a Logitech MX300.
Edit again: Oh, it suddenly started working. I have no idea why, but I'm not complaining. Now I'm suffering from the game not registering all my commands instead, guess I'll have to keep looking through troubleshooting boards.

This threw me too the first time around. Mouse support while flying is off by default, and the option to turn it on is rather deeply buried in the preference screens. I don't have the game installed at the moment, so I can't give you precise directions, but if you go though all the preference screens systematically you'll find it.
Had a spare moment to install it, and contrary to my earlier post the option to enable the mouse is hiding in plain sight in the first screen of the prefs, in the lower right. I tried to take a screen shot but that caused a crash to desktop.
Anyhow, in the 'loading bay' screen that appears at the start and between missions, click the lower right area as indicated by F1 to get to the prefs, then look in the lower right area of the prefs screen. You should see prominent buttons for mouse on and off.
HTH,
Richard.

I remeber playing this back in the day with someone who got their mouse working, but they always complained that it didn't work right and that it was hard to play. If you can't get it to work right or don't like using it, I'd highly suggest just going and getting a non-force feedback JS (for probably ~$20-40), as that will work fine and add a lot of fun to the experience.

The controls are way different than Freelancer. Where you could most everything you needed to with the mouse in Freelancer, this game requires one hand on the keyboard and a joystick is usually better than the mouse.

this is a good ava.
I am so not seeing an option for the mouse on the options screen.

It should be in the same main options area as joystick sensitivity, volume, difficulty, etc ... There should be an option to turn the mouse on/off and to tune the sensitivity of the mouse.
Ok... somehow I missed that all 15 times I went there looking for mouse options.
I feel dumb :(

No worries - happens to everyone eventually!
