I must say that when I first started playing this game back in '99, I didn't think much of it...until about six years later!
Back in '05, I found out that Volition's DESCENT: FreeSpace 2 had been released a second time in '01 that included a Source version of the game made by Hard-Light Productions (HLP). Since then, I've seen how far this game (...AND it's series...) have come since its release! HLP made FreeSpace a modding paradise compared to most other games! I mean, the guys in the HLP community have made (AT LEAST) 50+ mods for the game! I'd like to see a different game beat that!!!
And if THAT wasn't enough, then what really made FreeSpace: Source (aka: "FreeSpace 2: Source Code Project" or "FreeSpace: Open") beautiful was that HLP RE-DID all the models, textures, and skins ON ALL the ships and objects, as well as made FS2 OpenGL compatible (which is the best thing to use when running the SCP; for some reason, it doesn't like Direct 3D). HLP also threw in all sorts of little toys to play around with when running the SCP, increasing the enjoyment of the game EVEN MORE!!!
Also, (and just an FYI for anyone who wants to see if they can get a free copy of the game) FreeSpace Open may come with all the files needed to make the game as good as I described it, but, as of the Source release version 3.6.9, HLP NO LONGER put in a copy of each of the FreeSpace games, which is good for GoG, and bad for loner gamers.

PS: I AM a HLP member, so I do know this info is all confirmed. Oh, and, yes, the HLP staff and community added to ALL the information about the FreeSpace history, races, and tech you see in the game. Just look on the Hrad-Light Wiki!
