I'm not fond of holding down control to pan around the game world, I'd rather assign one of my free mouse buttons to that task.

This seems impossible currently?

(I realize you also need to hold down control to rotate buildings, and again, I'd love to be able to use the mouse wheel for that instead.)

I have the rotate camera on middle mouse button. But you can also use the keyboard
Q = Left
E = Right
R = Up
F = Down
I hope that was helpful. A remap keys option would be great though!

We will look at button mapping eventually. It is currently a low priority but will be improved before the full release. In the mean time there are a few (free) 3rd party software options that you could look at that you allow you to map keys to mouse buttons or remap your mouse.
