I'm trying to run the game on Windows 10 64-bit, but it doesn't even start. By taking a look at the event viewer, I found this:

Does anyone have a fix or workaround?

Have you tried setting the compatibility mode for the game to "Windows Xp"?

Right click on the game exe, select "Properties" then choose the "Compatibility" tab: there you can find the compatibility modes.
I had the same problem, so I tried many different compatibility modes and none worked.

Then I saw "Launch Demon Stone" shortcut in the main folder, and that works perfectly.

Seems GoG launcher doesn't use that that shortcut and just tries to start with the .exe which doesn't seem to work on Win 10.
Thanks to everyone who has posted their fixes so far. Unfortunately, none of these workarounds fixed the problem for me...what did work was lowering my graphics settings to 1600 x 900 60hz (which, btw, looks *exactly* the same as every other setting I tried).

(I've necro'ed this post so that future gamers can have all suggestions in one place)

EDIT as of 2022, this no longer works on my Windows 10 Home edition build 19044 (new laptop that runs pretty much everything).
