As mentioned by others on this forum, I'm facing inconsistent framerate under Windows 7 64-bit. While most of the time the game runs above 100 fps, any area with large amounts of enemies causes sudden drops to under 40 fps and then rapid rises and falls in fps. The game is still playable and based on other user reports the issue does not exist in XP, but did anyone manage to fix this problem for Windows 7?

On a side note, my hardware far exceeds the system requirements (the game is very old either way) and the graphics settings are maxed out but run at 1024x768 to preserve aspect ratio.

Just tried playing this today (with the patched version), and I'm noting the same issue. As soon as the mobs get on-screen, everything gets pretty choppy. It's playable, but not the easiest on the eyes. It doesn't matter what graphics setting I use (I started off maxed and backed it down to 1024x768 with absolutely no difference in performance).

Does anyone have a fix or workaround, please?

(Yes, I necro'ed this post...first, so that people could see the history of the question, and also because there is only one page on this forum.)

EDIT TO ADD:

Ah, found something on another thread. Apparently, deselecting the "Shadows" box solves this issue. Worked for me, too.

Thanks for posting back to this thread, I stopped looking for a solution after some time and the game ended up collecting dust (for several years too)! Will check if this solves the issue for me whenever possible and mark as solution if it does :)

Yeah this does nothing, the framerate is completely deplorable with a rig that eats over 500 video games for breakfast lunch, and dinner, waste of money.

Sigh.
Yeah I know, it's necro, but i had the same problem on Win10-but found a solution!

Yes, deselecting shadows works, OR from the game's files run the game only with Demonstone.exe! But not through the launcher, this cause the FPS Drop! (demonlaunch.exe)

Oh and don't alt+tab, this will cause stuck at 30 FPS!
