I don't know why but one of my party (the fighter/thief who is designated archer) keeps automatically selecting targets and shooting in combat. I don't get to choose his target or give the command to shoot. How did this happen and how do I turn it off?
Thanks

You accidentally pressed the auto combat key. You need to press Space to regain control. IIRC you need to do it when the character in question has his turn, so just spam the space button when until you regain control.
Alternately, you can use Gold Box Companion to regain control of your guys. This is especially necessary since these games often run too fast.

It also adds a fancy hud above dosbox with your character HP bars and XP bars. It's also crazy powerful for editing characters, items, saves, etc, and if that's too much power for you, I suggest you only use it when necessary.

At the risk of seeming like an idiot, I need a guide on using it. I downloaded GBC, clicked on gbc.exe, and selected and ran the game. But it sits behind the game window (full screen) and doesn't have any options to select. Is there a step by step for GBC?

Oh wow, it's changed a LOT since I last used it. The version I used was 0.50, and it's up to 2.01 now?

So, first, run you gold box game, any of them, and get your game loaded.

Then you run GBC.exe. Select the game you are playing, and then you click the box below the list of games that initially says "Click this to set game folder". Alternately, if you've already set this, it'll display the directory, and you click it again to change things.

Now, with the GOG installs you probably just want to select it's install directory. I play slightly older copies, and I actually have a separate save directory mounted and configured. It makes some aspects of transferring characters easier. But I think for the typical user, your install directory will work.

After that, click on the save game slot you just loaded. All this does is look up your character names, so it can scan for them in active memory. Once it's loaded the savegame, click the Search button to actually search through active memory.

Now the settings for how it searches through memory are in the left panel. It's the Window title, Address range and max gap. I've never had to change these. But if for some strange reason your dosbox is maybe a different version or something, you may need to change this.

After you've clicked Search, you should be good to go. You'll see your characters up top, their hitpoints and xp bars. It looks like a feature of this one is that it turns off Auto on it's own after every fight. So there you go.

Edit: I almost forgot! This works best when you run the game in windowed mode. It tries to dock itself above the windowed Dosbox frame.

But when I run the game windowed it's way too small. Any way to make it bigger?

Well, if you play a lot of dos games, I'm a huge fan of Dosbox Game Launcher, DBGL. Makes it really easy to change your dosbox config, mount additional drives, pick a ready set of performance settings to more accurately emulate the machines of the time.

But, if you use GOG Galaxy, select Curse of the Azure Bonds, click more instead of play, select Other, and then Graphic Mode Setup. Now that you are running the DOSBox Configurator, uncheck Fullscreen in the Basic Settings, and in the Advanced Settings change the resolution to something more appropriate for your monitor.

Thank you very much. I'll try it tomorrow. I do play a few dosbox games, so maybe DGBL will help with HOMM 2, for example.
