Every time I defeat a group that drops the symbols, no one can pick them up. I get an "overloaded" complaint... and my party isn't overloaded AND they have plenty of room in the inventories. How heavy are these things?

EAch one weighs 256, but there's 6 of them so 1536 altogether. If you give them to someone with 18 (00) strength it should be ok if they're not carrying too much else. Hope this helps.
