I am used to Dragonlance ssi where there is no mouse control but something unusual happened when I started up pool of radiance. at the character creation screen I was unable to use my arrow keys so I was unable to create anything other then a dwarf. Any suggestions?

To move up and down the list use HOME and END keys (works also on my laptop with 1 and 7 from the number row).
You can use the same keys to change the active (highlighted) character during the game.

You have several options to scroll up and down:
1. Use the Home (Pos 1) and End keys.
2. Use 7 and 1 on your numpad.
3. If you don't have a numpad, using 7 and 1 among the regular number keys works too.
