So I gave up on trying to clear the slums because of that stupid troll fight. and did other stuff for experience. I managed to kill Norris the Gray and win the battle at Whatever Keep (the enemies surrended, probably they were impressed that my party survived for so long), and when I went to the council I got the reward for killing the bandid, cleansing the keep, and clearing the slums... but I didn't do the last one. As far as I know, you need to clear all set encounters, but in my case I don't have to...?

You just have to win enough random encounters there for the area to be considered safe.

The trolls are only at a fixed place, not wandering around. (But given human stupidity the trolls will still be well fed by visitors ;-)

Huh. The cluebook made me think that I need to win all battles to get the reward for clearing the slums, but if that's the case then alright.

You need to clear every set encounter and defeat 15 wandering encounters to clear the Slums. I've been playing this game since I had a C64, and it has always been that way.

My experience is that once you've defeated the wandering monsters, the area is considered cleared.

Excellent question...I always find it amusing when people post in a forum that contains comments for several games in a particular series, and just go right into their question as if there is only one game covered by the forum and everyone is playing it...;)

At least he didn't post it in the main general forum, so the INT-check did work there :D

But the WIS-check then failed, can happen, retry and next time he will succeed.

AND by the way, if you go to your account and check on a game the download -> more, you will get an option of FORUM and in this case no indication for the user that he will be redirected to a forum containing more than one game. Yes, you could blame him for not reading the top of this page, but if he did it this way, it would explain this behaviour, or? (and yes I only stumbled across this hidden way by random but who knows ;) )

I think it might be different for the different versions. I've only played the C64 version and you definitely need to do the Troll fight - which can be almost impossible unless you're lucky (mainly if you have high stats - lower stats actually seems to make less enemies and thus makes this a little bit easier). But I wouldn't be surprised if on other versions (such as DOS) you just need to clear the random encounters and thus can ignore the stupid troll fight.

The way I defeat the trolls is to leave that room alone until my characters are at least level 3 :D.
