Decades later a sequel was recently announced. Kind of bizarre -- how many people even remember this game now or were actually hoping for a sequel? -- but FYI:

I certainly do. Thanks for sharing.
I am quite excited about this! I only learned about Flight of the Amazon Queen when I joined GOG on 2017 (I'm not even sure if it was published in my country), it was actually the first GOG game I acquired, and it has become one of my favorite point-and-clicks ever. I love the idea of revisiting the charming world and characters.

The people in charge are John Passfield and Pete Mullins, the original developers of Flight of the Amazon Queen, so that makes me reasonably optimistic about Return.
I stand corrected, didn't realize this game was so fondly remembered by others. I'm old enough that I played games that came out around the same time as this one but had never heard of it until I got it free on GOG (it was easier to miss things in those pre-internet days I suppose) and thought it was only okay when I played through it but glad others are excited.

Good news: the game developer John Passfield stated that he will try to publish Return of the Amazon Queen on GOG too (source).
The developers have shared a first look at the very first location in Return of the Amazon Queen: https://amazonqueengame.com/2022/01/27/first-look-at-mexico/
