F.E.A.R. is an WinXP era game, but on GOG's purchase page for F.E.A.R. it says "Windows (Vista, 7, 8, 10)".

What gives? Did they forget to put XP in the requirements description? It should really be there.

And it's not just F.E.A.R. either, I've noticed a few GOG game's pages that have this issue.

Thanks,
Stone

They are removing XP and Vista from supported OSs as they do not support them anymore but in most cases you will be able to make it run on XP anyway and if not, you must have some modern OS that you use for internet, just use that.

F.E.A.R. demands a much better GPU than I have on this old laptop so cannot try it for you. It has XP too though I seldom login to that.

Ummmm...

If it is an XP game, which F.E.A.R. is, then it should run on XP. Otherwise, GOG is not selling "F.E.A.R.", it is selling "F.E.A.R. Win7" -some special version of F.E.A.R. that is NOT the original game we want.

And I'm afraid I don't understand your internet comment. How is internet related to playing F.E.A.R., do you mean for MP?
The point that was being made is that there is no official support for Windows XP any more.
Extended support has ended, and Windows XP should be phased out due to the myriad of potential security risks associated with using it as your base operating system.
The same will soon be true for Vista, and then Windows 7.

Since there is no longer official support for Windows XP, GOG appears to no longer list Windows XP as a supported operating system for newly released (or re-released, as the case may be,) games.

Even if Windows XP is not listed in the system requirements or supported operating systems list, the game will likely still work on it if, for some reason, you wanted to use Windows XP still.
(Just as DOSBOX emulated games would probably still work on from an MS-DOS operating system, or Windows 95 or the like.)

As for the comment regarding "internet" which confused you...
The point being made there was that you probably already have a computer with a newer operating system, like Windows 7, 8, or 10.
Therefore, the point was, you should just use that system instead of trying to mess around with Windows XP, which is no longer receiving security updates.
A bit late response but little explanation. This is old type of game not really suited for low end or old machines but! After some patches these requirements lowered a lot (with patch that added modabillity like 1.1 or so). Even after that recommended setup stays because this game isn't exactly masterpiece of optimization and these cool shadows and dynamic lighting will eat as much resources you have especially if you decide play with antialiasing and widescreen resolutions. Really, lighting and shadows are not optimized but they looks best in this game. It could be that DX8 shaders will not improve on certain rig and disabling these, running purely on dx9 will provide best experience. World is a lot more detailed with somkes, particles and stuff with physics that constantly work even when you are not in area they should render, also AI do as much as they please even when not triggered. Everything is basically opposite of Unreal - on low settings it loves your GPU, on high will murder your CPU, on integrated will kill your CPU all the time using your video and ram to buffer stuff between levels and autosaves. There is option to restart renderer between maps but will provide little lag between actual save so called black screen. Loading/quickloading always refreshes or removes that accumulated lag (especially in expansions, namely Extraction Point is black sheep of optimization because geometry of levels it uses). Outdoor areas and overdetailed offices will most likely be starved hogs for your poor PC because engine was never meant for them.
