Just bought this game after having played it a looong time ago. Looks fun but difficult -- but there are some glaring graphical errors. Some of the walls in the starting area was missing, but I managed to get them back by playing on Medium graphics quality. Some of the hills are simply missing though. Others looks kind of blue-ish. Is this a common problem, and do you know how to solve it? I'm on Win XP 32-bit, Geforce 7900 GS.

This issue came up a while ago and I had to refresh my memory on how to fix it. Here you can check someone having the same problem as you and asking for help http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNeagIyjzZM "Far Cry | Texture Problem | HALP"

The solution had to do with updating the Shader 3.0 problem that was causing this. It was addressed in a patch by Ubitsoft:

Patch 1.32 change log
* Fixed a Shader Model 3.0 issue that caused graphics corruption on new ATI hardware.
* Set the game to detect nVidia hardware to avoid shaders being compiled during run time.
* Recompiled the 32bit version with a different version of STL to address some server slowdowns.

I don't know up to what patch is the Far Cry GOG edition, but here is the official Ubisoft patch link:

http://www.ubi.com/US/Downloads/Info.aspx?dlId=691

I would recommend either doing the full cumulative patch or just the 1.32 patch. Either way, if it works or doesn't please post feedback to help others.

Hope this helped.
GOG version is patched up to 1.4, which is the latest official patch.
Thanks for looking into this.

Unfortunately nothing works :((((

GOG version is already 1.40 so it SHOULD work there, but doesn't. Yesterday I tried to update to the unofficial 1.42 patch. Didn't work. Then upgraded to the 64 bit for 32bit mod that's available in the sticky, hoping it would somehow solve it. No luck.

Today I tried to downgrade. When I tried the 1.3 patch it was finally possible to install. No luck there either. Same with 1.31, 1.32 and 1.33. Absolutely nothing changes in-game. Unless I run it with the despicably bad Low textures, the game has the blues.

Would love to fix this, but it seems nowhere out. As usual. Story of my life.

Any other ideas?
I know it's quite obvious, but maybe changing (upgrading or downgraging) of GPU drivers would help?

Check out the solution found on this thread, let's see if this helps you out.

Edit: I just did a quick google search of : "far cry texture problems" and just like I remembered there were tons of threads with these problems. The good news is that they all seemed to be solved and revolved around "playing" around with your graphic card setting and patching the game. So don't give up, since it is a really fun game.

Try this link http://www.overclock.net/t/25526/far-cry-texture-problems and if the solutions there don't work, do a google search yourself and I am sure one of the many solutions out there will fix it for ya. And if it does, please share what you did to help others who might face the same thing.

I have been searching for 3 days, but all people say is "patch it" in various words. GOG's version is already 1.4, so that's pointless. I've tried it umpteen times though. Finally found one guy who said I should untick Punk Buster when installing 1.40. Did that, but no change. Then found somebody who said I should manually change r_driver in systems.cfg to "OpenGL". That actually solved the blue-white thing. But now there are black shadows everywhere, and the ocean tends to get a huge black square all over it. When I put shadow and lighting quality to Low this kind of disappeared, but now there are some other graphical errors.

I just can't win :(

Think I'll just give up now. Pointless trying to fix this for days on end. It obviously doesn't work no matter what I do, and I have no idea how to fix it. May as well consider it wasted money and move on already :|

Too bad you still getting some issues since it is a great game, lot's of fun. Good that you figured out the "open GL" issue since it is difficult to know what type of settings you have. But "open GL" is a must for using the graphic capabilities of your card. I believe the alternate to this is DirectDraw.

I would recommend one last thing, the game runs using Directx 9, Google "Directx 9 upgrade" and run an install on the latest version you find. You are getting close at being able to run it and like I said, there's plenty of people who downloaded this game already and not a lot of complaints on the graphics issue. So it might be your computer needs a few tweaks here and there. It will likely help you in the end for future games.

Also after having changed the "open GL" option and upgrading Directx 9, do a full uninstall and if you have a registry cleaner, just run that. If you don't you can google "ccleaner" which is free and you can read the reviews online for it, it is a pretty well regarded utility for cleaning both the hard drive and registry.

Well, hope this helps and give it one last chance. You can always wait for the weekend and give yourself some time to think about it.

Good luck.

Edit: I have had problems displaying the windows download page, here is a reliable link source for the Directx 9.0c (the letter indicates the latest version issued". http://www.filehippo.com/download_directx/

I already have directx updated, everything was supposed to be right here, but something isn't. No idea what it is. OpenGL didn't work long so I had to revert, which didn't quite work (got an error message when starting the game), so I had to uninstall and reinstall the game - again. But then I installed the oldest driver I had, 197.xx. Now it finally worked!! Smacked everything up to Very High, and it ran smoothly. Yay :)

Of course, now other games will run worse or with horrible errors, but at least I'm able to play Far Cry. No idea what is actually wrong, but maybe newer nvidia drivers aren't backwards compatible. Was impossible to get them to work no matter what I did.

Finally managed to get into that carrier, but have now failed twice to hit that small boat at the end. Tough firefight there too, which I had to redo. Looked up a youtube video now, and apparently I'm supposed to cut it loose first. Oh well. I'm not very good with games like this.

That is so awesome. I knew you could do it LOL. Enjoy the game it is fun.
Unfortunately that is the only way to fix the graphical glitches.
I have tried Far Cry on two different computers with Windows 7 and GeForce 8800 and updated drivers.
Both have these missing textures or blue texures.

I run LAN parties so there is no way I'm downgrading my drivers for one game.
I tried a lot of the steps mentioned above, but it really comes down to current Nvidia Drivers and that shader 3.0

Ironically I ran Far Cry in Linux with PlayOnLinux and had no problems like this at all. My Linux computer has a GeForce 550 Ti and used OpenGL. Ran perfectly.

So not sure why its happening but its pretty frustrating.
I hope that Crytek or Nvidia will give a little attention to the problem. If not, then Far Cry will be lost to the graveyard of games that are unplayable.

I am running windows 7 and cannot for the life of me find where system.cfg is stored.

Can someone point me to the right directory?
Late but you never know, might be helpful to some...

I tested the GOG.com version on a vintage PC from the good old Far Cry days. It's a P4 3.2 GHz, 2 GB Ram, GeForce AGP 6600GT, XP SP2 and X-Fi.

The latest driver from the Nvidia site (307.83) has the missing walls / black areas.

175.19 from 2008 works fine though :)

Also under XP with hardware audio, EAX, headphone and CMSS-3D: WOW the game is so awesome. I have a 1920 x 1200 screen and play the game at 1600 x 1200 4:3 retro aspect ratio.
And here my P4 3.2 GHz with a 6600GT at 1600 x 1200 and on Windows XP2. Image attached.

Guys,

I would like to share here my adventures too. Tried for looong hours to make it work on a Intel HD Graphics 4000. Its an i7 3520M from aroung 2012 or so...a notebook. Performancewise possible.

The devs wrote different render paths for different hardware.

Luckily there is a log written when FC.exe is executed..file is put in de Far Cry dir. In it besides other info the following is stated
...
System: VideoCard Detected: Intel (Unknown)
...
D3D Driver: projected textures with Env. bump mapping not allowed
Projective EMBM: Disabled
...
Use Hardware Shaders for ATI R420 GPU
Pixel shaders usage: PS1.1 only
Vertex shaders usage: VS1.1 only
...

RV420 architecture is the Radeon X800 series ...but unfortunately Intel HD 4000 is quite a different chip. And only early shaders? So no wonder everything looks good but the water indoors (right at the beging of the game) the environmental mappings is just left out in this case and to see is low quality water. see attached pic

I tried different permutations of drivers and patches ... but no remedy.
To let you know some of it :
v1.1 r_driver="direct3d" results in blue fog
v1.1 r_driver="opengl" results in THIS
Super interesting. This is a feature intel probably has not implemented since it is barely used in graphics so this chip will fc1 never render properly if it is not emulated through the driver in opengl.
I conclude with this though this article: https://cookieplmonster.github.io/2018/07/07/farcry-d3d9-bug/
v1.1 r_driver="opengl" + silent patch results in black land masses
of course i tried other versions between 1.1 and 1.4

On an other machine with an quadro k2000 (basically a nvidia 640) everything runs perfectly, even r_ShadersPrecache = "1" is no problem. WIN7 x64 nvidia driver 296.86

log says:
