FC 1 used to work just fine. FC 2 still works fine. But FC 1 now hard locks on the 1st splash screen, requiring a physical re-boot.

While I hadn't played Far Cry in awhile, this might have happened after my last Win 10 update (20H2). I've tried the admin and "run as" options. No love.

Any bright ideas please?

I had the same problem... I fixed it by running in compatibility mode.

I'm running in Windows 10 Home 64-bit (with all the latest patches).

The only compatibility mode that works for me is Windows Vista SP1.
Sounds strange... it was the last one I suspected would work, but it does for me.
