One of my all time favorites. I am very happy that it is now available on gog.
It might be a bit pricey, but I bought it anyway, just for the sake of it. :D

The game doesn't look very exciting (the graphics were a bit outdated already when it came out; the graphics for the units are very elaborate though), but the gameplay is more than satisfying and the soundtrack is unique.
While the game is easy to learn, the sophisticated units and classes make for a gameplay rich in variety.

Wishlisted. Star General would probably be an instabuy.
The soundtrack is superb and one of my favourites in more recent times. I'm not normally a choral guy, but even those pieces really took me in.

100s of hours of play time. I think it takes 60+ battles to win the campaign and there are 4 different generals to play with.
One of my all time favorites. I have a quick question regarding the gog release though:

Are some of the music track really quiet? I have different versions of the game (german and english) and some of the later tracks that play are considerably more quiet than the rest. Is this the case for all versions or just mine and the gog version is "fixed"?

Going to buy it soon either way :)

Didn't come across anything while testing it out as I was too busy doing General Bosco things ^^, but let us know if you do come across it
Turn-limit kills this game in my opinion. You have to build lots of heavy infantry, use their "forced march" ability and rush towards the objectives. So you cant even use basic links like "infantry + archers" because archers are too slow to keep up with infantry.

Yes.
The whole system rewards combined arms, minimising losses and keeping units alive for experience and upgrades. Then it promptly turns that around with the infuriating turn limit system which counters all of that. It's like schizophrenic game design...

You certainly can! Just have to use a different mix. Heavies plus artillery. flying units as lancers, mopping up weak defenders.

Haven't played the game in MANY years but, after I learned how to play, I don't recall the time limit being hard until the first and last battles on the last continent. And there's supposed to be a CHALLENGE in the game, right?

This game relies heavily on the proper use of combined arms. I played it when it first came out and again (using DosBox) about 5 years ago. The term limit adds some extra stress on a few maps, but your archers, while slow, are very important to your success. Think of them as artillery.

I guess I'm going to have this play this game again!

I found Bombardiers were more effective than Archers as they could cover more distance.

Did a run through as Krell with a mixed army of HI, Cavalry, Skyhunters, Skirmishers and Bombardiers. I found that I didn't really have any problems, provided I engaged and disengaged correctly. What I will say for the game is that more than army composition, you need to prioritise keeping your troops alive at all costs. The further you get in, the more you depend on experienced troops for victory.

You can grab it here, for free: http://panzergeneraldownload.com/star-general.html

This site is listed on Wikipedia under Star General entry, so I assume it's safe and legit.

Having played both, Fantasy General is superior. The problem with Star General is that it was rushed--there was no campaign included. Very tragic, because Star General had so much potential.
