I went to the Toxic Caves & discovered the green ooze causes damage. I read online that the Rubber Boots protect from said damage. So I restored an earlier game and got them (not to spoil where I found them).
Now before I make it back to the Toxic Caves and potentially get stuck there, do I need to do something to wear the Rubber Boots, or is having them in my Inventory (and my mule's Inventory) enough?

They work passively so having them in your inventory is all you need for them to work. Be careful though because they seem to break at random amounts of exposure. I lost a pair after walking across a single puddle once and after a reload they lasted long enough for me to have a proper look about so I recommend saving before you enter the toxic sludge part of the caves.
Edit: Just to clarify that also applys to your mules(followers) they each need a pair of boots to not take damage if you want them to follow you. If not you can ask them to wait at the entrance of the cave.

I read on Per Jorner's walkthrough that he hacked the game & found it to be a 1% chance that the boots dissolving for every step you take in the green ooze. So save every now & again, indeed!

Wow I'm very unlucky to have had them break after only a few steps. I actually though my game was running way to fast or something at first, until I reloaded and tried it again and they were fine the second time.

I just walked through my first puddle o' ooze. I made it through, and Sulik's boots dissolved after just a few steps.
lol...it happens!
