I've been playing Fallout 2 a bit for the last couple of weeks on my netbook. It works fine apart from two things mainly:

1) It takes ages to load a save game from the main menu. Especially if that save is in a big town/area. The loading times when going from the world map to close-up locations are also kind of long.

2) In the larger areas (towns mainly), the game seems to slow down a bit, the cursor also lags.

Does this sound normal for a netbook with this game? I read some reports elsewhere that it runs perfectly, and I suppose it does in smaller areas of the game.

I installed the restoration project mod prior to playing it. I chose 640x480 resolution for the best performance, but I was wondering if the way that the restoration project alters the game does in any way make loading/performance worse? Anyone know? Or does what I describe sound normal for Fallout 2 performance on a netbook ...

I could reinstall the game without mods I guess, but thought I would ask here first:)
Just wanted to post and say that after re-installing vanilla Fallout 2 it has solved all my issues, in case anyone else ever has performance issues with the restoration pack.

It did take the removal of ddraw.dll from the game directory to solve similar performance issues that persisted, but now it is running and loading as blazingly fast as I would expect from any PC you can buy today.

Re-installing the restoration pack afterwards and then deleting ddraw.dll did prevent the game from launching, though.
hmm, i know this might not be related what so ever...but on my desk top, I don't notice any difference between modded game or vanilla game....both load up and play just as quick

but yeah, i am pretty sure my desktop is powerful enough to handle any fallout mods
Any half-decent desktop will be just fine.

My netbook also lagged on FO1 when I first installed it - it's down to integrated graphics cards and incompatible ddraw.dll

Deleting the dll is the easiet fix since it forces it to use window's native one instead.

In some cases this can cause colour corruption (can happen in vista/seven on any pre-DX8 game) - this is easily fixed with a registry tweak - details in my thread 'Win7 Major Issues'
