Hello all,

As a long time fan of the old Fallout games (FO1, 2 and Tactics) I recently bought and installed Fallout 4: Game of the Year edition here on GOG. This is a great game! Half-way through, I decided to look for some mods. And ran into some problems.

After one day of google-searching, my conclusion is that modding Fallout 4 seems to have quite a steep learning curve. And a whole lot of confusion depending on what version of the game you use. And a lot of different strategies to install mods, depending on when (as in what year and day) you try to install them - the guides from some years ago do not seem to be relevant anymore. Frankly, to me, as someone completely new to Fallout 4, this is quite a mess.

The so called mod organizers (Mod Organizer 2 and Vortex) seem to demand that you have the so called "Next Generation" update in order to work. When trying to start them, they both notify me that version 1.10.163 (The GOG Game of the Year edition) is too old and has to be updated.

For manual installs, the guides that I have found require you to use the Mod option in the game menues, but that option is disabled in the GOG version.

Could someone who knows how to install mods for the GOG Game of The Year edition be kind enough to guide a Fallout 4 newbie llke me to how to use mods for this game?

(Ps. I am not a game modding newbie, just at Fallout 4 modding newbie.)

Best regards,
Kristofer

Thank you for your reply! :)

I found out the problem and made it work. The problem seems to be that the current version of the so called "Fallout script extender" is written for the "Next generation" update and does not work with the 1.10.163 GOG edition. I had installed the script extender manually according to the instructions on Nexus Mods when installing the mod organizer called Vortex. That made my game not start.

The solution for me was this:

1. Clean install of Fallout 4, the 1.10.163 version from GOG.
2. Avoid all mods and programs that use the "Fallout script extender". Check that the mods have no requirements other than then the vanilla game, or mods with no other requirements than the vanilla game.
3. Download the mods manually and unpack them in one single mod folder.
4. Download and use the mod organiser called "Mod Organizer 2" (MO2). I avoided the mod organizer called Vortex since it requires the script extender.
5. Setup the mods using MO2.
6. Start the game using MO2 and the "Do not use Steam" option.

For me, that works.

FO4SE website literally has the GoG version of the script extender on it. 2nd link.
