Hi, I'm not sure whether it's the problems with the laptop or simply compatibility problems.

It's a samsung np370r4e which has i5-3210m, amd-hd8750m 1g, 500g, 8g ddr 3 ram, using win8. The hard-drive had been separated into 4 segments when I got it. Technically it could run witcher 2 on low or even medium so that's why I bought it for under $300.

The laptop turned blurry and crashed when I used the default music player to run my music (ripped from bought CDs), then I installed arcanum while playing mp3 at background with winamp. The installation never ended so there is a short cut at starting screen and a shortcut at desktop but it's not in the installation menu. I ctds after the logo.

Then I installed fallout and other than it installed successfully, it still crashes after logo.

Is it gog game compatibility, win8, or simply I got a broken laptop?

Don't install GOG games into Program Files but into a custom folder like C:\GOG Games\

Make sure all older components of DIrectX 9 are present on your system (they're missing by default on Win8) by installing this:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109
Run and extract the content to a separate folder and start dxsetup.exe for installation.

Try starting Fallout directly with falloutw.exe in its installation folder.
Try compatibility modes for Win XP and Win7, by right-clicking falloutw.exe => Properties => Compatibility tab
On this tab also tick the options box to run the program as an administrator.

Try the FIXT patch for Fallout (with or without additional content is up to your liking):

EDIT: As for your general problems, turn off all anti-virus programs and see if it makes a difference. Check your harddrive and memory, see here: http://www.gog.com/support/fallout/checking_your_ram_and_hard_drive_for_errors

Thank you for the throughout answer. I tested a bit and found occasionally ATI catalyst control center would use 100% disk usage (even when idle) which would often interrupt installation and make the installation freeze/crash. I need to be lucky for the game to be installed before disk usage gets overloaded, and every few minutes it would start crash the game(or winamp).

Never knew win8 could be this troublesome and win8 had been out for 2 years already... errr.
