Catlegs: … I heard good things about Arcanum, it's also on sale for few bucks, but I haven't heard too much about Wasteland 2 or Atom RPG.
I would bet that you would enjoy Arcanum. The lore — combining incompatible technology with magic — is meticulously and interestingly implemented: weapons and armor, for instance, suffer damage in combat and can be repaired (but not perfectly).

Nice to read that you enjoyed F1. I finished F1 in January 2017 for the first time. I'm currently trying to play Fallout 1.5 - Resurrection and this is also a really nice F2 mod.
Thank you, I'll try this as soon as I have time :-)

A total conversion mod for Fallout 2. I should play it one day myself.

Catlegs: I has only played the "new school" Fallout games prior and it was a very different experience. I was going and with pretty low exceptations but was blown away by how good the game is.

I like how little the game tries to hold your hand, it really feels like the devs actually respect my intellegence. Even though I had to use a guide more than a few times, it was immersive and interesting to explore the Wasteland all on my own searching for the water chip with the doomsday timer constantly hanging over me. Also having a villain with a motive and philosophy that isn't simply "might is right" is very refreshing.

I'm really glad I played this game because not only does it stand on it's own merits, but it also enhances the experience of Fallout 2, which I started right after finishing the first game. So far, Fallout 2 is such an amazing sequel. The way it takes the setting and themes of the Fallout universe and evolves them is something I've never seen before.

I know that Fallout 2 is more highly regarded but make sure that you don't skip this one.
Dont forget to play Tactics afterwards and be on the look out for mods that improve quality of life.

Catlegs: I also wanna play Fallout 3, but I've heard horror stories....
I played like a half hour of it and didn't really grab me. Does it get better later? What do you like about it?

Hickory: It doesn't get better, it's soulless from beginning to end. To quote Chrismas_Incubus from Steam forums:
"A lot of the game is designed with the mindset of "wouldn't it be cool if..." rather than that of trying to build a cohesive game world. As a result, there is a town that has been built around an undetonated atom bomb, a cult of vampires, a society of just children, "superheroes," and a random hotel of snobs, just for the sake of having someplace an evil person can live in.

The story is almost entirely focused on appealing to emotion, with your character trying to find your dad, and the heavy themes of martyrdom (despite the fact that there has never been a single point in Fallout 3 where it was necessary). If you analyze the story, you'll notice that a lot of motives are driven by pure stupidity. Your dad wants to purify water so that others may have an adequate drinking supply, but the bad guys want to take the purifier over by force. Why? So they could turn on the purifier instead of your dad."

You only have to search Google to see all the horror stories. You will get fan bois, too, but the only way to really determine how bad (or good) it is is to play if for yourself.
*REDACTED - GOG Moderation* the Enclave wants to use the water to kill mutants, not to take the credit for it, and youre missing a shitload of other towns like little lamplight made up of kids, Big Town where those too old to stay in lamplight, go there. Rivet City which is rich with stuff to do, the town those vampires attack, Arefu, on a bridge. Oasis wbere Harold lies, President Dave's place and more. Not that im denying the faults you mention.

ZyloxDragon: I've only played a little bit of the game, so haven't had gotten too far into into it yet. Sneaky characters in these type of games are generally harder to play.

As far as FO3, my biggest issue was the ease of the game and almost everything is a bullet sponge based on the leveling dynamic. That can easily be fixed with mods though. The quests can't. Exploring the Capital Wasteland wasn't bad at all. Modded - I think the most fun I've had in any Bethesda game was the tunnels along with FWE + MMM installed. Most times I ended up running out of ammo, and dropping mines as I beelined for an exit, hoping those ghouls wouldn't catch up to me and there wouldn't be any Talon mercenaries waiting for me when I got out. Ah yes, fun times.

darktjm: FO1 and FO2 juggle for top spot in my list of favorite games of all time. I lost interest in Underrail pretty quickly. They don't seem to me like the same kind of game at all. I doubt you'd be drawing comparisons if it were in a fantasy setting, instead. Arcanum and Wasteland 2 are much more similar, and the upcoming ATOM RPG may well also be similar, but I can't tell until I play it (the Linux support and video gameplay footage give me great hope, though)r.

Catlegs: Good to see that I wasn't the only one who didn't get drawn in by UnderRail. I heard good things about Arcanum, it's also on sale for few bucks, but I haven't heard too much about Wasteland 2 or Atom RPG.

Catlegs: I guess you can have fun with any game as long as you mod the shit out of it. It's a lot of work though. Spending a whole afternoon installing mods can be a bit tiresome
Get Arcanum and Wasteland 2 as fast as you can, fantastic games, fabolus RPGs, youre gonna get amazed at how massive Arcanum is.

Catlegs: I already have a modded New Vegas ready to go, I'm just waiting for the right moment.

And I'd reccomend the high-res patch for FO1 and 2, my individual
avatar
FLX83: Oh I see :-) I'd play New Vegas then and skip FO3.

I have some high-res patch installed, but it makes everything on screen tiny.. the UI doesn't scale.

Its a good game, better than New Desert.
