If you buy Fallout 1 from GOG it will come as a fully playable install with DOSBox bundled.
Just install it and play.
I thought Fallout was a Windows game, not a DOS game.
GOG provides only the windows version of Fallout 1 and 2

battlezone: GOG provides only the windows version of Fallout 1 and 2
battlezone is correct. While Fallout was released for DOS, Windows, and Mac - The GOG Version is the Windows version. If you want to play using DOSbox you will have to get a DOS release of the game and configure DOSbox yourself.

How to run Fallout in DOSBox

I have seen this question multiple times around the internet. Even to the point of searching for the original DOS version of Fallout. It seems finding the original DOS version is impossible. However, with the help of some forums online, there is a way to "convert" a regular windows version of Fallout, and use it in DOSbox. I've decided to write a very detailed tutorial. Plus, this requires no warez, or illegal files. Just the original Fallout patch, and some system files.

What you need:
DOSBox 0.74 | Or equivalent
Windows version of Fallout 1.0

1. Download the Fallout 1.1 DOS Patch (http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=49)
This will patch the game, but will also contain the DOS version of the fallout executable.

2. Extract the contents of the archive, and copy all files into your fallout folder. If asked, overwrite everything.

3. Download dos4gw.exe (http://www.scene.org/file.php?file=/resources/dos4gw.exe&fileinfo) and place it in the "Fallout" folder. NOT the "DATA" folder. It needs to be where your fallout exe files are located, in the main folder.

4. Download hmidet.386 (http://abuse.zoy.org/export/288/abuse-frabs/tags/2.10/hmidet.386) and place it in the Fallout folder. Just like step 3.

5. Download hmidrv.386 (http://abuse.zoy.org/export/359/abuse-frabs/tags/2.11/hmidrv.386) and place it in the Fallout folder. Just like step 3.

Your Fallout folder should look something like this:

http://i55.tinypic.com/343hlab.png

I highlighted the important files. Ignore everything else.

6. Open your DOSbox configuration file, and change the value of "memsize" to "32".

7. Open the Fallout.CFG in your Fallout folder. This is a configuration file. Change the value of "art_cache_size" to "5".

8. In DOSBox, cd to the Fallout folder, and type "Fallout". The game will now run in DOSBox. You may or may not have sound. So if you want sound, you may have to tinker with the DOSBox settings.

Have fun, and enjoy your DOS version of Fallout.

I wish this worked. :(

I read the whole post that this came from, and, apparently, it won't work unless you delete the two 386 files. I definitely had this issue. If you do delete them, it will play, but without any sound.
Does anyone out there have any more info about this? Got sound running in fallout through dosbox?

I think you can find them via this thread - http://www.gog.com/forum/fallout_series/how_to_play_pc_games_with_dosbox_turbo

So I just bought this in the sale and wanted to run this on my android.
I followed the instructions above but the download links no longer work.

Does anyone have an up to date link for the dos patch?

Can you tell me why would someone want to play dos version by doing all these stuff. Is dos version better? Can you explain?
Puzzled why, if the Windows version works fine, why somebody would go to all that trouble to "convert" the Windows version of Fallout to the dos version.

Windows version doesn't work on an android phone, but you can get dos emulators on android.

Edit: I found an up to date link for the patches

Go to http://www.nma-fallout.com/resources/fallout-fixt-full-all-fixes-and-mods.8/
follow the links for the latest version.

1. Install Fallout 1 on a windows machine (I used a win 10 vm check out modern.ie for MS official VM's)
2. Then run the fallout fixit patch (I tried this with wine but some of the patch scripts failed to run)
3. When selecting the type of install, there is an option to include the DOS exe. You will need to select it. This will also add dos4gw and the other files TheFifthHorsman mentioned above.
4. in the fallout/fallout fixit/ directory edit Fallout.cfg setting "art_cache_size" to "5".

5. in Dosbox cd to fallout/fallou~1 and run falloutd.exe

This is Where I've got to so far. I copied the Fallout Dir to my android device and tried to run falloutd from DosBox turbo. I get the loading screen but it then fades to black and then nothing.
I've tried changing a few DosBox settings but not found anything that helps yet and no error messages.

Presumably someone has an OS (e.g. OpenBSD), which doesn't run Windows executables, but supports DOSBox.
Maybe someone is running FreeDOS.

And Windows version still does not actually work 'fine'. Latest custom SFall for FO1 fixed most of the issues, though.
