Alright, so I'm always hearing these great things about Fallout, right? People online, my cousins, uncles, and so on. So I purchase it and try it out.

*sigh* Call me silly, but I just can't seem to get into it. The interface is clunky (not so much the design of the HUD as the "right click to switch actions" thing) and the screen scroll is INCREDIBLY annoying. I'm not giving up on it yet -- YET -- but I was just wondering if I'm the only person who feels this way?

I dunno, perhaps I'm spoiled by games like Diablo and Divine Divinity. Fallout just... I dunno.

Help?

i just got fallout 1 for the first time, and while i do agree about alot of this stuff, the actual gameplay/story is great, so just give it some time, and hopefully you will get used to it.
I found that the screen scrolling was less annoying if i used the arrow keys to do it, rather than the mouse.

But you are right, the interface really is quite bad. You definitely need to work past it to get to the great stuff in the game. But it really IS great, and definitely makes putting up with the annoying interface worth it. I've never really played any other game quite like Fallout, and I've rarely felt compelled to just keep playing as strongly.

You might also want to look at Arcanum, also available here on GOG. It's by many of the same people who made Fallout, and has a lot of similarities, but the interface is a bit better. Arcanum has a few more balance issues than Fallout does, but the improved interface might make it an easier game to start with. Although Arcanum does have some annoyances in the early game, and it's not quite as "open" as Fallout is.

Got gifted Arcanum recently, and I did much prefer the interface (not to mention the real-time fight system) but I KNOW I'll like Arcanum just based on the setting and the little bit of play I've had already, even though I died against a pack of wolves less than ten minutes in. It still had the annoying scroll problem though -- then again, I was an idiot and never considered using the cursor keys, so that might help a bit, thanks.

I WANT to like Fallout. My first THREE CHARACTERS I made died before ever leaving the first cave, though, because I had trouble getting used to the interface. My latest one I'm having a bit better luck with, but I think I'm still going to restart again to try and do things a bit better, like avoid tackling Vault 15 until I'm at least level two or so (and perhaps have some rope.)

If you haven't yet, I highly recommend reading the manual (this is true for Arcanum as well). It does a good job of explaining the mechanics and interface, and these really help a lot when you make a character because you'll have an idea of how that character will play. There should be a PDF manual in the game directory. You can also download it separately by going to your GOG account page, clicking on Fallout, and then looking under "additional content".
There's a very nice big FAQ/walkthrough written by Per Jorner that gives good advice about character building, even if you don't want to use the actual "walkthrough" part. It's geared more towards powergaming, and there are some things I disagree with, but it's a very good place to start for a beginner to the series. He's got an equally good page for Fallout 2 as well.

I complete understand where you are coming from it took a while to get into it. The npcs on my team were driving me insane at first. After a few levels and perks plus a little time, you will be able to overlook the flaws and see the gem that it is. Oh divine divinity great game thumbs up!
I'm in the same boat. I've put near 100 hours into Fallout 3 so I got Fallout wanting to try it out and I can't get into it either. Maybe Fallout 3 ruined it for me, I don't know. It's not a graphics thing though, because that doesn't bother me. For me, the game just feels so slow.

Combat can be sped up using a "combat speed" slider in the game options. This will make enemies turns happen very quickly so it gets back to your turn faster.

But yes, the original Fallout games were slower and more methodical. They take some effort to get into, with their rather outdated interface and graphics, but I found them to be some of the most fun games I've ever played once I got into them. I recommend giving the originals a chance even if at first it seems they're not your thing.

Same here, was interested in playing a new game, couldn't find any which interested me so I bought fallout (which I was really unsure about but interested me enough with its price and content).
I have played it for about 2 hours now, still not really getting into the gameplay.
It feels really slow, the walking in particular, I have no problem with combat speed when it's set to fastest.
Also the scrolling is not much of an issue if you use the resolution patch (which I needed since I couldn't see a small part of the screen).

It actually took a few months after I bought the first two games to actually get into them. They both open slow and the early battles are frustrating especially when you don't know how to find other party members. But after looking at a walkthrough for both and taking some time to play them, I got REALLY into both 1 and 2. The story, humor, and choices you have are top notch. There is so many different ways to approach things it makes you feel like you can do anything in it. If you level up good enough you can even bypass a lot of bits and beat the games quick. These kind of games take about a full hour learning curve but once you start getting hooked you can't put it down, trust me.

In the options you can set it to "always run" which will make your character move around a lot faster. There is a slight difference between walking and running in combat, but it hardly matters and I pretty much used running the entire time.

You can't run when sneaking though.
Of course, there's a Perk for that. So eventually you can. But yeah, not to start with.
I agree with bevinator about Per Jorner's FAQ.

But try to avert your eyes when reading a lot of it. Only read what you need to know, because obviously there are many spoilers that are all too easy to read (if you're like me, anyway).

Also: Is your avatar a Final Fantasy character or something? It seems familiar.
Secondly: Did you ever get into Killing Floor?

I wasn't sure if it would affect the gameplay so I left it off, I'll try to play it with running on next time.
I'm not giving up on this yet, I have given up on too many games.
And I think the learning curve is not too bad, I got the hang of the basics in the first 30 minutes.
