No, you do not have to kill all the creatures.
No, it is not essential.
If you don't see it, your perception isn't high enough.

Hey guys, if that dabate was on paper, you've have killed a whole forest by now only to resolve nothing. No offence but how could you sell a game, sorry a classic just to make it different. Of course they won' make it different. Second just for the kicks I went back to the vault searched and its quite easy to spot it i mean REALLY EASY. Just next time you watch tv to watch it too close because it damages yours eyes which results in not finding "the rifle". But overall hope you enjoy this great game.
Ps. I made a screenshot so there is no more confusion.

God I never got that rifle before this thread. I started a new game just to check it out. I don't think I ever followed a Fallout walkthrough to know about it.
Having a hunter rifle really must make raider's camp a lot damn easier.

mcfeher: On my third walkthrough, I was careful to pay attention when I was in southeast corner, and I finally saw the message.
The first two times I must have been too busy shooting rats or blowing myself up with dynamite to notice the message. On my first walkthrough I was fixated on trying to use the dynamite to clear the room, but that doesn't work.
The SMG is in one of the lockers, but the Hunting Rifle is listed as being in one of the bathrooms. 3 out of 5 walkthroughs specifically mention a hunting rifle in a bathroom. But I never found it.
But I'm over it now, because I was able to acquire a hunting rifle and a truckload of .223 ammo in Junktown.
Thanks to everyone who posted.

The hunting rifle IS definitely in a bathroom in a western corner. Always. The only problem is that it blends with the floor and is very difficult to find. You have to try. It's near the toilet.

mcfeher: I may have gotten the message but scrolled it out of the way too quickly by pointing at a bunch of other stuff. I will probably try to reload and watch more carefully this time.

My current character has a perception of 8, so I think that's high enough.

What about the hunting rifle? So far 3 out of 5 walkthroughs have mentioned it. Maybe it's random or luck based? Or based on a skill?
Its on the second floor in the second bathroom/toilet in the top left corner... Hard to see as its blends in with the floor... Just scroll for a will your find it... :)

I've played Fallout 1 at least fifty times, probably more, and I didn't realize there was a rifle either :-o
