Is there anything I need to download or modify for Fallout 1 or 2 to work? I know getting it off Steam has some complex instructions to work right, but what about on this? If not necessary, any recommended things to do for it?

To function? No. FO1 was censored, though, and the mod sticky should have a solution on that.
Actually I'm curious about this too. I've always played the Steam version, but now that I have it on GOG I was planning on playing it again. Does the GOG version need Fixt or is that unnecessary?

By the way, that sticky is way out of date. Pointing people to that thread for current mod/patch info. is very unhelpful.

Edit: It appears the GOG version includes the official Interplay 1.1 patch, but not the official 1.2 patch. In addition, Fixt includes a few unofficial patches that fix various crashes, dialog errors, etc. so it seems to me that it is still a good idea to install Fixt on top of the GOG version. Just don't install all the optional mods that come with it if it's your first time.

Use the unofficial compilation patch Fixt and the hi-res patch for Fallout 1.

Use The Restoration Project and the hi-res patch for Fallout 2.

With those things you should be set.

If he's playing for the first time (as the title says), I would not recommend Restoration Project. Get killap's unofficial patch, instead.

The Restoration Project is pretty essential, some questlines will be incomplete without it especially ones in The Den and with Sulik. I see no reason why a first time player shouldn't use it. I think we all enjoy having extra content in our games and it'll make their first experience with Fallout 2 that much better.

If everyone enjoyed extra stuff, there would be no reason to have killap's patch.
It's a matter of preference. Some guys like playing vanilla, first. And then going crazy with mods in the second playthrough.
Unless you're planning to play the game only once, I wouldn't recommend RP.

The Restoration Project is different from other kinds of mods, it's not just a cosmetic mod. Heck the fact that we get some extra unlocked Sulik dialogue for his talking head is quite something. Playing a game vanilla is not something I'd recommend because games hardly ever come complete at release anymore, and PC games even of those days were still filled with bugs and issues. It isn't like getting console games on something like the SNES or PS1 where the game was complete out of the box.

I'd lean on recommending using only the patch for the first play.
Cant remember anything specific, but I felt some of the restored content just wasn't up to the standards of rest of the game.
If you want a vanilla experience (as I did), I'd just install the patches, the high resolution and the killable children. Even if the sticky is outdated, it points to the web where you can download the newest version or the exact name to google.

Captain obvious to the rescue!
Stop trolling! You seem to be the only one that didn't get it what I meant.
