It's my first time playing NV. What do you think of Rex?
After playing FO3 ever since its release, with Dogmeat - Rex just... doesn't feel right.

Here are my problems:

Rex is suffering, because his brain is getting too old (?) and can't be sustained much longer in that cyber body of his. Which means, the only way to "fix" it is, get a new brain. Now. Question. Who is Rex, what makes Rex what he is? The brain, probably? Then, what happens if you replace that? Rex ain't Rex no more, Rex is Rey or whatever brain you put in there. Won't see the King or the player as his master, would probably rather want to go back to his / her original master. And, here comes the bonus, for one that person doesn't know how to care for a cyberdog, and that poor dog will then eventually also end up suffering, just like Rex did before in what, just a few years time...?
GREAT, LETS DO THAT =D

Now, okay, that's assuming the brain's responsible for Rex' personality. If it isn't, let's say it's more of a biological CPU as with the whole Robobrain situation. Then, what do we do, at that point? We kill a perfectly healthy, natural dog for its brain, slaughtering the poor thing to basically "salvage replacement parts" from, like fucking lunatics. And even if we would agree on the AI of Rex being sentient and all that, that still doesn't justify killing another, just as sentient dog to keep this one living. Because, whichever way you twist and turn this one, it still ends up being one less dog in this world. Will that be due to one dying his natural death, or you killing it for favoritism? That's all this comes down to, really. Egoistic selfishness, playing god, in a very sick way.

And then of course, the other, unspeakably cruel issue with this. Whichever brain you put in there won't ever feel being petted on the head any more, because, hard braincase. Now that's just sadistic. And, this might be just me but, have me staring at exposed brains for too long and my brain literally begins to hurt. With the Scientists in Big MT, you are at least focusing on their moving screen-faces, but with Rex, you always stare right at his brain, if you look at him.

This has been bothering me for longer than I'd like to admit, now.
Are you a dog person, and if so, what's your take on the morals of this situation?
What are your thoughts about Rex?
Like him? Hate him? Don't care?
... just me being weird?
