Hello all. This is the first time I'll be playing Fallout (wasn't really a PC gamer back in the day), and have a question about opening the bonus material. Recently, my newer computer took a dive, and I have been using my sister's old Dell. Every time I've downloaded a game onto this computer, which uses Vista, I haven't really been able to access the bonus material. I was trying to open the Fallout Bible so that I could read a little bit about stats and combat and the like, but Windows won't open the file. Is there something that you guys think might help, or should I maybe just contact support and try to see what they can do to help me? Thank you.

Do you have adobe reader? It's in a PDF after you unzip it.

I didn't even think to check that. Maybe I don't have a new enough version. But I have opened PDFs on this computer before.
Well, I can't even catch any luck trying to download adobe on this POS, so that point is moot. Think I'll just start playing w/out any idea of which skills are useful and which are basically dead weight.

thank you for the link, friend. Yeah, I kinda want to look at some of the stuff it might have about stats and combat, just as primer. None of the LP's seem to spend too much time on explaining that. They just say, "I'm gonna go with these, and you all can watch me play".

Ok, well I thought the Bible was a strategy guide, not a story primer. But thank you for your help.

Yeah, I probably would have found the online walkthroughs, I just that The Bible was a strategy guide as well. Thank you, though.

Those guides have break downs on stats and his opinion on useful perks.

I was really just hoping for a straight stat and combat primer. I have never played the game before, and I don't really want to read through a walkthrough that reveals sensitive story information of any kind. I'm looking at the other link you sent me right now.

Other link? I sent you two links to Fallout 1 and 2 guides
Anyway you didn't need to use the whole walk through just read the parts before the walk through starts for some of the stuff you wanted.

Copied from the guide
Strength: Useful for carrying stuff and using weapons properly. Start out with at least 5, but ST can be increased by 4 points during the game so more than 6 is probably overdoing it.

Perception: Good for ranged weapons, but not crucial. You should start with at least 5 for the Awareness perk.

Endurance: Determines Hit Points and not much else. Unless you like close combat a little too much I wouldn't put more than 4.

Charisma: Not so useful, unfortunately. Affects bartering both directly and indirectly, but does not limit your number of NPC followers. A CH of 1 is perfectly viable.

Intelligence: Unless you plan to rely on brute force for everything, this is likely your most important statistic since it rules conversation and determines skill points per level. 7 is a good starting value.

Agility: Determines your Action Points, so you probably don't want less than 6, and starting with anything up to 10 doesn't hurt.

Luck: A high LK is good if you plan on getting Sniper, or special encounters. If you don't care about critical hits you won't suffer much from a low Luck score, otherwise don't start with less than 5 (or you won't get Better Criticals).

for example.

You sent me a link to Fallout Wiki that had the Bible on it. That link just had a bunch of story. Then you sent me a walkthrough link that had what I wanted. That was the link that I was talking about. I think we were typing over each other for a second there.

And again: Thank you for that link. It is quite helpful.

My problem was that I thought the Bible might have the basic info I was looking for so I didn't bother looking for online walkthroughs just then. But the Wiki link you sent me too just talked about the story, and I'd rather discover that on my own.

It's decidedly unfamiliar system. I've been playing D&D games for quite a while now.
