Played Fallout 3 1st - thought I'd play the original title.
PROS: Fallout is fun once you figure out how to get around, combat, etc, which doesn't take long to figure out. If you really like Fallout 3, then you should play this game a bit so you can see the roots of Fallout 3 - the computers, the vaults, the keyboards, the books, weapons, uniforms ... so much of it was faithfully reproduced in Fallout 3. The game has a lot of atmosphere, humour, tension. Combat can actually be exciting. The story is good. I found myself playing thru about 90% of the game, and I thought at first I wouldn't have the patience to play an old turn-based game. Actually, the game is only turn-based when in combat. When not in combat, you can run around as much as you want. Background music and sounds in this game provide good atmoshphere.
CONS: Graphics, especially on a wide-screen monitor, are not the best, but not awful. Game crashes at times, but not a lot, maybe about 5 times total for me. Combat mode sometimes doesn't know when to end. You can get stuck a lot if you have a large party, like 3 people and the dog. If in a confined space, they can bunch you in and they sometimes just won't move. A good rule of thumb when playing this game: Save, SAVE, SAVE .. a lot!
Overall, I did like this game and I appreciate that this is the game that launched a series. But I loved X-Com UFO defence more.
That post (although it sums up Fallout 1 pretty well) is very strange to read for me.

As a Fallout enthusiast (the Fallout 1 demo got me hooded, F1 was one of the first games I preordered) it feels strange to compare F1 and F3 this way around.

For me Fallout 3 is a good game on its own, but a very poor sequel to the series.

But thanks for sharing your view, it was very interesting and accurate (the cons are spot on ;) )!

Although now i feel somewhat old ... ;)

Its actually a review on the fallout page, not sure why a review shows up in the forums every now and again but you can't rate them as a normal forum post. You can go to the fallout gamecard though and vote 'yes' or 'no' for if the review was helpful.
