So I just started playing Fallout 2, after having finally figured out how to install all the mods and patches. After creating my character and going through the first cut scene, I go to save my game before heading into the temple, and I get: "Error saving game! Unable to save game."

The mods I installed were Killap's Unofficial Fallout 2 Patch, Fallout 2 High Resolution Patch, and Sfall 2.17.7z. For Sfall, since it was partially included in the Killap patch, I only replaced ddraw.dll. I did modify a few things in ddraw.ini: I set [Graphics] to Mode=4 for dx9 fullscreen and changed GraphicsWidth and GraphicsHeight to 800 by 600, but I think that's all. I also had to go into the compatibility properties in FALLOUT2.EXE and uncheck "Run in 256 colors." I can't figure out why it wouldn't be saving properly.

...Help? ;o;

If you are using Win7 or Vista, it might be due to a problem with write permissions in the install folder. Try going into the compability options and check "Run as administrator".

Nope, not working. =( I might try doing a full uninstall/re-install, just in case I screwed something up during that.

Edit: I am using Windows 7, if that makes a difference.

I had the same problem. I have Avast as antivirus and as I was installing Fallout 2 Restoration Project, the sandbox protection kicked in and I guess it didn't install properly. After uninstalling Restoration project, saving didn't work either, but after I reinstalled Restoration Project, then saving started working.

THANK YOU! Disabling Avast and reinstalling over the old install worked for me. I can't now run FO2 without any problems whatsoever.
Hey, I am not very good with PC games, but lately I've been getting the pop up "Error saving game! Unable to save game." and I don't know what to do. This is the first time it has happened after hours of play and I've tried every way I could through the game, but it didn't work. Can anyone please help me out?
