Instead of getting rid of one of your followers, why don't you buy/steal some Mentats? This drug improves charisma. High charisma is needed to have a big group (The max number of followers is 5).
The game checks your charisma when you speak with a NPC you can recruit.

If you have 1-2 charisma, you can get 1 follower.
If you have 4 charisma, you can get 2 followers.
If you have 8 charisma, you can get 4.
Etc.

The perk Magnetic Personality, allows you to have one extra companion (even if you fail in the charisma check). But the max is still 5, you can't have 6 (unless you modify your game).

Oh I didn't know about Marcus.
I wouldn't advice having him in your group. He is badass, but he will hurt you and your friends many times (unless you equip him with something like power fist), and he can't equip armor.
He will strugle a lot in the late game, you'll have to reload the game a lot if you want him to survive.
If I were you, I would say sayonara to him, and hire Cassidy.

Marcus will be sliced like a sushi in the oil rig.
He's not the only one, Goris is pretty fragile too, so you better bring a fuckton of healing items with you (stimpacks, super stimpacks, etc).
Unless, of course, you don't want to go guns blazing when you enter the facility.
But it's not like Fallout 1 cathedral, there is unavoidable combat (final battle).
If you have any questions in mind, feel free to ask them here or in chat.

almabrds:
If you're planning to use followers like Marcus it might be worth doing so with the Restoration Mod, since that allows you to get custom armor for him which I believe is better than what he wears naturally (i.e. his skin). I haven't actually gotten around to trying this yet so would be interested to hear how people go with it. FYI the restoration mod doesn't change all that much and all changes are in line with the designer's original visions (apparently)

Also, if you have a full group (total of 5 including yourself) when you "have some fun" with Mira or Davin then you can potentially get 6 followers since I'm pretty sure these characters always join no matter how many you've got or what your charisma is (assuming it's high enough to get into that "situation" in the first place). Naturally this isn't worth doing for any practical reason - and the effort to do this is highly likely to vastly exceed any benefit whatsoever.

On Vic and getting him to stay "close to you" - do you mean during combat, or during non-combat (walking around in real-time)? Because those are separate settings.

Finally, my final two cents: I'd agree with almabrds and trade Marcus for Cassidy as he's just better at ranged damage dealing while minimising collateral damage and can survive easier.

OK my final FINAL two cents - although the final battle is technically unavoidable, it is possible to swing things in your favour to a pretty high degree, which combined with some good initial pre-battle positioning can make it much easier to win and survive.
Speaking on moods, there exists an opportunity to control your party members directly, turning the battle in to direction more like Jaged Alliance or similar.

Don't know the latest status of it, but back when I did play that way, it was quite buggy though - nothing really game breaking, but, for example (apparently due to engine limitations) any person you control benefit from your perks for while you control him and things like that.

Of course the whole thing comes out extremely overpowering in any case, but great fun nevertheless. Expecially given the engine scales patrol and event size on your party size, means, if you indeed go for the trouble of building an army there can be pretty huge battles.

Well, it more about spinoff replay options than your first experience, but worth to mention here I think.

You mean like Fallout Tactics?

Heh, yes probably very true. Fallout Tactics still is in my "must check out some day" list though.
