Hi
I’m a fresh owner of Fallout 1 installment from GOG.com and I'm going to play this game one more time, but now without using any solutions/walkthroughs. Stability and maximum bug free work is very important to me, therefore I have some questions.

1. Is Fallout 1 from GOG.com UK or US version?
2. Which patches do I need the most (official & unofficial)?
3. Am I going to have any problems because of installing to Fallout 1 GOG version patches made for Fallout 1 CD version?
BTW
I think we could gather the most important information about Fallout 1 from GOG in this topic and than write a simple instruction how to make Fallout 1 work without problems. I see in other topics some issues with ddraw.dll file for example. Maybe GOG team will release new install file for F1 in the future.

1. It's supposed to be the US version as far as I've understood.
2. Don't know if you absolutely need any extra patches, I use the sfall one since it fixed my peoblems with the ddraw (extended info below) and I've gone up to the unofficial 1.3.3 patch (which needs the semi-official 1.2) and "just in case" (since I couldn't remember where to find kids and it didn't hurt the game in any way) I've also added the "F1ChildPatch" and mine's been rock-solid.
3. I've had no problems with the above patches at least, unfortunately that's not a guarantee it'll be the same for everyone else...

Yes, the danger with removing it from the install is that it might cause problems for some, like me and I've seen someone else too with it.
I had the slow game with it, removing it made the entire screen go black every now and then (on average I'd guess about every 30 secs, but that's average, it came about once/5 secs occasionaly and worked for about a minute some times) and I solved it with the sfall patch. (which however gave me some corruption of the movies, but that is something I can live with)
So it's a bit of a problem to just remove the ddraw.dll with a new installation from gog since it might cause new problems, I do however agree that a FAQ with gathered questions and solutions should be available in a sticky though. (I'd guess that the gog team already has it planned, they're in beta and things like that's prob. on their to do list...)

It's the UK version, actually. The US version is uncensored; the UK version has the child sprites removed. There's a patch linked to from the Fallout Mods thread that adds the sprites back in.

Seconded :)
We players have to beta test first ;D Seems like not a lot of persons had other types of errors, somebody should create a topic which would go sticky and/or in the "article" section of the game (which should be renamed as FAQ btw).
BTW² : I'd like to know if it was possible to install the children patch, after having installed the 1.2 and 1.33 patches. Will it make my saves incompatibles ?

I knew the US version has the kids and that the UK (which was what us Swedes got as well) doesn't, I read somewhere, might've misunderstood though, that this was the US version. (thx for info and clearing it up, this means that I needed the childrens patch and didn't add it "just in case" then. :))

Worked fine for me, I had already done the updates before I added the children patch. (do note the "for me" part)
Do what I didn't - and didn't need, but I didn't know that beforehand - copy and save the affected files and folders somewhere else on the HDD so you can copy it back in case it doesn't work for you.

Yep, already did that for I don't remember what in Fallout.
Heh, this conversation rocks.
First of all, thx for the replies and for the help. I've done some investigation and I found that Fallout 1 GOG version is UK's. For example children in Shady Sands don’t exist, but with children patch everything is fine. I also recognized that Fallout 1 from GOG isn’t 1.1 version but 1.2 and I’m sure of that in 100%. GOG team should correct this on F1 page. Right now it seems like I should install patch 1.3.3 only...
PS
I also found on No Mutants Allowed forum patches like this:
- Fo Ammo Patch
- Avega's Fallout patch 1.3 beta
Are they necessary or are they already implemented in 1.3.3 patch?

The ammo patch alters the game mechanics, I believe, so you might want to try the game without it first. The second patch is sort of an "alternate" patch to the 1.3.3 patch. For best results I suggest you pick one or the other, but not both.
I personally use the 1.3.3 Team X patch fro my playthoughs, so I can recommend it.

I just went for the resolution patch.. things are much better in 1200x780
I'm having trouble locating this "children" patch. Are you telling me GOG's version is a censored version and I should see children in the various locales?
Nevermind, found it.

Does the order the patches are applied matter? I also noticed that the game is already at version 1.2, probably because it is the European version and not the US, so if I go to 1.3.3 and want to add the children in what is the correct way to do it?

Not sure if it's the correct way, but this is how I did it. :)
I got the 1.3.3 patch first and then added the childrens patch, not sure if it matters which way you do it though since the childrens patch - according to date on NMA - was made 3 years before the 1.3.3. (that makes me think that adding children before 1.3.3 should work equally well, but it's always a good idea to backup the files and folders that are affected before trying, that way you can always "go back in time" and do it the other way)
I noticed that I made a mistake above, it's the 1.3.4 that was made in -07, but looking at the polish 1.3.2, it was made in -06, so that was made before the childrens patch too.

Is this that same Black Screen problem where you move the mouse around and it uncovers the screen? If so, where can i find this sfall patch? I'm having the same problem and its making the game near unplayable for em.

Yep, it's exactly that problem, the patch is here:
http://timeslip.chorrol.com/sfall.html
It does corrupt the in-game movies though, when you do what's necessary to get rid of the blackness, hope you can live with that. :)
You'll need to change mode under "Graphics" in the ddraw.ini to 4 to make it work. (at least I had to and it's that setting that causes the corruption of the movies)
Edit:
What kind of graphics card do you use BTW?
I have an ATi 2600 XT myself, was thinking that if it's something that just happens with this and the other chips in that series it could be good to make a thread about it, like "ATi 2x00 owners, read this"...

I'm using an 8600GT myself.
Anyway, which version do I DL? I seem to have tried both, but neither work.
EDIT: Now, every time I go to open fallout, it says I need a different version of Windows. I;m running Vista 32-bit, perhaps that the problem?
