hey guys, i just purchased fallout 1 a couple of days ago under the impression that it would work on windows 7 64 bit, but I am having problems with it. I checked the FAQs before posting and have tried changing the ddraw.dll file name as well as the falloutw.exe file.I have been running as administrator and still having problems. Before I started to fiddle the game was crashing randomly so I did the above fixes and it has stopped crashing but the colour is screwed and it keeps blacking over the screen. Any advice would be much appreciated coz even though I can't play properly I am loving the actual game!
So, at the moment, your "Color is screwed." Could you describe your problem in more detail?
If it's just a matter of all the colors being off as soon as you boot the game up, the problem might be with your computer's resolution settings (not in the game, mind you, but on the desktop), but I'd like to know more.

Thanks for replying, I hope I'm describing this well but when I start up the game the screen seems to go to a very basic colour scheme in comparison to when I start it up with the ddraw.dll file intact and when I'm playing the screen goes black and I have to 'rub' the black out with the mouse to get the screen back... hope that helps :-)

Opening (using the C key) and closing the character screen can often clear the black screen.
Also try shutting down any other applications you have running to see if it makes a difference.
To stop my colours from messing up in win 7 I used a high resolution mod.

I was playing with the white lkabel verion of fallout though so you may need to install team X's english patch first to get the high res mod to work.

That said it will still occasionally go black but like kezardin says opening the character screen or any window within the game will clear it.
XP, Vista and 7 has the black-screen in F1. Annoying. Not much to do about it 'cept hitting c and esc. If you're lucky it doesn't appear often.
For everyone who may still be having trouble with color problems or display problems with black screens, etc., check out this link. Randomnly found it in a topic on gamefaqs and it helped fix any display issues for me. If it doesn't work the first time then restart your computer and try again, it worked for me when the tool randomnly didn't work sometimes (probably just my computer). Hope this helps.

used palette stealer suspender for fallout 1. Worked like a charm to fix colors and annoying black screen.
