I had the original Fallout 1 and 2 on cd from when they first came out but over the years they got all scratched up and borrowed. So I bought them off GOG when the chance came. I have beaten Fallout 2 a LONG time ago, but never beat Fallout 1 in part because of the time limit for the water quest.
My question is, how long should I take before getting to the water chip? I have been reading Per Jorner's excellent Fallout guide and while it is extremely detailed, it doesn't really say what your goals/travel plans should be. I am more of a slow, methodical time-taking RPG player and I don't want to have to keep re-starting Fallout. Can anyone recommend a good rule of thumb for making my way through the game so I don't fail the water quest? Thank you very much GOGers.
You know you can extend the time limit by having the Fargo traders take some water to Vault 13, right?
That should give you an extra 30-60 days IIRC.
While it does pay to be methodical, it is best to get that quest done and then go back and explore the rest of the game in your own manner so that you don't forget by accident to get the water chip or you are stuck in a place where you cannot get to Vault 13 fast enough to deliver said water chip.
also even if you do all quests from the first cities (junktown, shady sands even the hub) leaves you usually enough time even if you play as slowly as possible.

Uhm, actually, unless something has changed since I played it last, one of the later patches removed the time limit.
The patch removed the super mutant timer that would end the game.
The water chip quest is still timed however.

... Oh yeah that's right. It's been a looooong time >.>
I've hit the time limit a couple of times so I'd say seek it out within the last 30 days but make a special save before you search because you never know...
